Baden and Roach simplify the details but retain the interesting aspects and serve up exciting and illuminating cases culled from Baden's extensive background as former Chief Medical Examiner for New York City. His curriculum vitae includes a stint as the chief forensic pathologist for the Congressional Select Committee on Assassinations investigations into the deaths of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr. Readers follow along during an autopsy, learn about bloodstain pattern analysis, discover the importance of insect analysis performed on corpses, and are introduced to the methods used to reconstruct faces from skeletons. All the information is presented in an easy-to-understand format, with plenty of grizzly detail. The crime-scene gaffs that derailed the O. J. Simpson trial, how DNA evidence has established the innocence of some wrongfully imprisoned prisoners, and the tests that determined the cause of Princess Diana's fatal accident are also addressed. Black-and-white photos add interest. Those who are interested in crime, criminal sciences, or just intrigued by science in general will find it difficult to put down this well-written and authoritative book.

Baden (Unnatural Death: Confessions of a Medical Examiner), former New York City medical examiner and current codirector of the New York State Police Medicolegal Investigation Unit, takes on these topics plus some not commonly discussed: blow flies, autoeroticism, and the one aspect of his work that is "scary and unsettling even terrifying." One feels part of the autopsy team as Baden who has performed more than 20,000 such procedures describes how the body arrives (bagged and tagged) at the morgue, how the autopsy is performed, how to know the difference between cause and manner of death, and how a body is read by police and medical examiners for evidence. This book is more than the cases Baden handled; it is an in-depth, engrossing look, even for the squeamish, at how medical examiners work and why you want a competent one on your side. Very interesting, but a bit political at times

This was a very interesting book. If you have it, the book will help satisfy that aptly named term, morbid curiosity. If you're squeamish, skip it though.
I liked the organization of the book. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the field. For example, there are chapters on the autopsy itself, blood, and bugs. The authors could have left the last chapter out, as far as I was concerned. It discussed a forensic convention held in Reno.
That chapter described some of the personalities and interests that exist in forensics. It also tended to lighten the tone of the book. I still didn't think it was necessary.
My one, small complaint is with how political this book is. For example, Baden seems to use almost every other paragraph to remind us of how awful the LAPD is, the LAPD crime lab is, and everyone involved with the prosecution of OJ. I think he has a point; it simply became rather painfully repetitious.
There are other examples of Baden expressing is political perspective on everything including Clinton. He's certainly entitled to his opinions and entitled to express them. He just doesn't seem to understand that he could use something other than a sledgehammer to drive his point home.
But that's a small complaint. Overall, it's a very good book, worth the price and the time.

Could not put it down

I'll admit it. On Tuesday nights, I am glued to Discovery to watch the forensic scientists at work. I am not in law enforcement and am not a scientist, I just love how they do the job of catching criminals. Dr. Baden's book is one of those that you have to keep reading once you get started. It is full of science, but doesn't overwhelm you. It is full of interesting people like Dr. Henry Lee. It is full of criminals and how they were caught or how the innocent were set free using science. I was so impressed, that I immediately ordered four more books on the subject, including one of Dr. Badens. This is a must read!

If it has, then it makes the Da Vinci code look like an old trick used again. Deep in a cave in the Ardeche region of France there is a set of paintings that have left the world stunned and amazed by the skill and quality of the work. Little did anyone suspect of what else lay hidden in the images themselves.

In one section of the art we see a lion spread across the wall with its mouth slightly open, but this is no ordinary lion. It’s a map of North Africa and Spain with a glimpse of the coast line of France in the bay of Biscay. The lion also appears to contain the Nile. Not as we know it today, but showing the original rivers. Sat right next to the Pyramids is a dried up river bed. This is the exact river bed being shown in the map.

The cave was discovered in 1994 and the art inside had been studied very carefully. Then, in 2012 a further chance discovery was made.

Hidden in the art is some form of message or coded story.

This book takes you on a journey through the minds and eyes of our ice age relatives and makes us ask ourselves a whole new range of questions about our origins and our past.

only worse. If you are interested in the subject of ...

I want to first qualify myself, not as an expert, but as an avid amateur who has read 40+ books on the subject of Paleolithic art and archeology, as well as traveled to south western France specifically to visit caves with parietal art--Pech Merle and Font-de-Gaume, among others. That said, the hypotheses contained here are, frankly, silly. It is as if I noticed that the sun and a soccer ball are both round and therefore concluded they must be somehow directly related to one another, only worse. If you are interested in the subject of Paleolithic art, I would suggest Paul Bahn's book, Journey Through the Ice Age, as a good place to start. You might also watch Herzog's film, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, as a primer on Chauvet cave.

Through the Paleolithic looking glass

If you are interested in ancient maps, a single picture in this book makes it worth a look. Imagine the thirteenth century renderings (such as the DiCanestris map) which portray continents as human bodies. Move back in time 35,000 years and imagine Europe and North Africa mapped as animal bodies.

And as star maps on the ceilings of caves.

Imagine walking along the bank of a totally placid and glass-like river on a sunny day, enjoying the fantastic "beings" that appear as the shore is perfectly mirrored in the water. I have often seen such faces as the one on the cover of this book. (Just orient the image to horizontal.)

I don't want to judge this book because I don't know enough about Egypt, calendars, or ancient religion. I don't accept the pyramid on Mars theory. And I don't really like Amazon's rating categories. But the author has given me a glimpse of a capacity of perception that I want to reawaken.

Compelling information and food for thought.

I think the cave paintings are just tremendous, so was interested in what the author had to share in terms of underlying or hidden drawings beneath the incredible art, linking ancient civilizations. I found the book very compelling and feel it tracks back to what Picasso said when seeing leaving Lascaux "We have learned nothing." Have we learned and lost vast information before? How can such similarities of elements within paintings happen when there's over 20,000 years between them? And what about that map within the drawings of the cats? Wow! Many questions raised and great food for thought! I'll look forward to further interpretations from the author and others.

His parents sought an alternate path outside the prevailing medical, educational, and social policies and norms of the day that categorized children who were different and had different needs. Filled with many obstacles and setbacks, this journey empowered a child who is a loving, remarkable, and talented individual.

The Cooper family’s story took on a larger mission of bringing attention to a broken system that in most cases takes a tremendous financial and emotional toll on the average family in the efforts of making a child better. Along the way the family did find dedicated professionals and special people who greatly helped David to develop, blossom and believe in himself. 
The Coopers entered, with hope, the vast complex of the special needs industry with its alluring maze of products, treatments, and services that promised the cure or improvement of autism, ADHD and other medical conditions.

This story is for any family who faces unexpected crises dealing with a child’s medical conditions and the quest to secure his or her rightful place as a valued, contributing member of society. Often the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and related disorders for a child can be devastating news to parents. However new scientific research being done at major university medical centers and private companies around the world brings hope in finding a cure or at least a successful treatment. The importance of intensive early intervention needs to be emphasized to ensure the best possible outcome. Creating a society that will accept and embrace differences will enable increasing numbers to succeed. Because of differences and different approaches of viewing the world, many of these individuals have made enormous contributions to society and world culture. Now David has grown into a talented young man who is making a positive contribution to society that those who diagnosed him could not have imagined.

Going on this journey with the author, along with David and his parents, is a tumultuous emotional journey. The author brings to light the tremendous emotional and financial toll of parenting a child with learning disabilities. But this captivating book also celebrates the victories encountered when parents, educators, medical professionals and other support systems work together to turn learning disabilities into growing opportunities. A sober, beautifully crafted romance!

Those who dont like this book may as well stop living in this world - the beauty of the world os not for them. This novel-or rather a novellette- breathes softness and romance in every word. Hilton's books are all most precious to me - they convey the feelings of either a world that is lost forever or perhaps a world that never existed but should. The craft of Hilton is apparent in the way he weaves the tale through flashbacks- the switches between the past and the present are so beautifully handled as to make them rarely apparent. The characters of Mr.Chips and Katherine are to my mind, one of the most delightful in fiction. Darcy and Elizabeth leap to mind - but this couple was not too far behind. I just wish it had been a much bigger novel- but small is beautiful they say. DOnt ever miss this one- or "Random Harvest". They are a couple of the best ever reads u will get.

Charming and Timeless

As a teacher, I found this book charming and inspiring. Here was a man of ordinary gifting and skill whose faithful relationships with his students made him extraordinary. Not a bad message when every generation of educators has its strand of obsession with innovation and results. Several blogs listed this as a must read for teachers, and I agree, but anyone who wants to transcend the hamster-wheel of seeking notoriety and actually achieve substance should also read it.

This story will keep the interest of people who believe in a religious presence in their life... and it will just as strongly mesmerize people who don't. The "THIRD-MAN" is a term that was given to the phenomena that has been reported many... many... times by people from all walks of life... not only all around the world... but from above the earth as well... when they were "assisted" during a tumultuous event... that could have ended their lives. All of these people... that included... mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, solo sailors, shipwreck survivors, aviators... and even astronauts... admitted having a mysterious... yet calming... "presence"... either appear in a form they could actually see and talk to... or... that they just felt that someone was either leading them... or following behind them... when their life was on the line. Throughout the telling of these phenomenal stories... the author provides documented medical and historical evidence... that at times verifies that there really is a "THIRD MAN"... and at other times... neurologists attempt to explain it away... based on criteria such as thin air... or hallucinations. Anyone who loves adventure in the wilder parts of our planet will be enthralled by this book. According to Wikipedia, the "Third Man" factor is a phenomenon in which an unseen presence provides comfort or support during traumatic experiences.

The most famous example is recorded by Sir Ernest Shackleton, who said in his book about the harrowing final leg of his epic tale of struggle and survival in the Antarctic region "during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three."

Since then, numerous other reports of a strikingly similar nature have come to light. Geiger's book describes many of these experiences in vivid language.

Interestingly, it is not only people "in extremis" who experience the feeling of another presence at certain times in their lives. Geiger also describes many such examples, from the invisible friends of young children to the experiences of religious mystics.

A surprising number of people sense the presence of a loved one after death. Others have had vivid experiences of Guardian Angels at critical points in their lives.

Geiger makes the point that our minds have an ability to evoke "sensed presences" in many critical situations and that this is a powerful evolved survival mechanism. He marshalls good scientific evidence for this claim. It is all quite credible, but sometimes he seems to want to believe his hypothesis too much and reads too much into the evidence.

However that may be, it is the stories themselves that make this book well worth buying. We can choose whatever explanation we like for the "third man factor."

I am a keen trekker in the mountains and have travelled in some remote places. While I don't have a personal third man story to tell, Geiger's book gives me much comfort that a third man may come even to me in some future hour of need.

There is an excellent list of notes for readers who want to delve further into the subject.

John Geiger's terrific new book was one of the more rewarding reading experiences I've ever had. Yes, it's entertaining--Geiger is a talented writer who recounts many thrilling tales here--but I was even more moved by the underlying message of hope. Whether you think the Third Man can be explained by science, or divine intervention, what is undeniable is that there exists within us an innate will to survive. What can possibly be more universal than that? There is something in this book for every reader.

The Tower is the second installment of the Psionic Pentalogy. Though each of the five books in this series has its own standalone plot, unique side characters, conflict and resolution, nevertheless they are meant to be read in order. So if you haven't yet read the first book, Wild-born, now would be a good time to go pick that one up.

To those of you who have read Wild-born and liked it enough to continue on with this series, I sincerely hope you enjoy this book too. Without giving away any major spoilers, allow me to say that The Tower is, in many ways, the beginning of the larger story arc that continues through to the end of the series.�An important new�character�is introduced while the original cast is further developed and the world setting is expanded upon. This is the deep breath before the plunge. As such, some readers might find the first half of this book to be a little on the quiet side, but I do promise a deafening climax at the end.

Excellent again

This series is similar in some ways to the Harry Potter series. Classical Good Vs. Evil. Enough plot twist to keep interest up. Not just for adolescents either, I'm 70 and am enjoying it. Just like the Harry Potter series which I've read 3 times. Would be nice to see a movie series about Adrian, Alia, Terry and Cindy.

Good writing bogged down by slow plot

Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions below are entirely my own.

"The Tower" picks up where "Wild-born" left off, meaning that those reading through the series in succession will be relieved by the lack of rehashing, but those trying to jump into the middle will feel quite left out. Effort is made to catch them up, but the finer points and subtleties are lost without reading the first book. Therefore, I highly recommend that you read that one first - doubly because from this point on, spoilers for the first book may appear. There will be very vague plot references to the second, but nothing that will be very "spoiler-y". If you'd rather skip it (or my ridiculously long reviewing style!) head on down to the last full paragraph, my "bottom line".

After being rescued from the Psionic Research Center in "Wild-born", protagonist Adrian Howell and his adoptive family seek new shelter. They find themselves a safe haven, certainly, but with the exception of a few rough encounters, this new home is almost too safe for my tastes, in the sense that much of the story feels like a training montage - the plot does not really pick up until the climax of the book, creating a sudden and jarring shift from comparative peace and almost slow-motion pace to the snappy, engrossing, page-turning style of the first book.

That is not to say that the first three quarters are not worth reading - the author is able to put the urban fantasy's style of world-building to work, clearly constructing an environment populated with interesting and diverse characters, including a few additions to the main cast in whom I am genuinely interested. Even the side characters have their charms.

Additionally, the author's writing style remains solid - he is able to operate through the eyes of a newly-minted teenager, in a way that is at once convincing and yet effectively descriptive. Adrian will need to go through a lot of growth and self-reflection, and it is handled well.

The downfall of "The Tower" is that it suffers from a bit too much introspection and not enough plot movement. I don't just refer to "action" in a traditional sense, but rather advancement. Watching Adrian train wore thin well before the training actually got anywhere, for example.

As to the editing and layout of the book, I received a .pdf for review, so I can't speak to layout of the Kindle Edition in practice, but it certainly looked good in theory. I noted no significant errors missed by editing, so I applaud the editor(s) mechanically - again, I just wish they'd made more cuts.

The bottom line is that "The Tower" is a fair continuation of the series, but its lagging plot keep it from the high quality of "Wild-born". The author's writing style remains solid, however, and the strong cast and interesting setting give me high hopes for the next book. I absolutely recommend reading book one first.

Excellent READ. Once you read this one you will probably be like me. I can hardly wait for the next in this series. Good, believable characters that quickly come to life and acquire a life beyond the page. The action is fast paced and seldom lags which makes you eager to READ on until done. Enjoyable experience. I definitely will READ more by Adrian Howell.
