WONDERFUL design idea reference
By lj
I love this book! I purchased it as an idea reference for my graphic design business, and it has been very useful. To have one book with so many different types of design projects (logos, posters, catalogs, websites, etc) has been wonderful. It has inspired me for many new projects already, and I would certainly recommend it to any graphic designer.

Playlist for the Dead, by Michelle Falkoff

“A page-turner that combines genuine intrigue with heartbreak and desire.” —Holly Goldberg Sloan, New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s

There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, Sam’s best friend, Hayden, was dead. And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs and a suicide note: For Sam—listen and you’ll understand. To figure out what happened, Sam has to rely on the playlist and his own memory. But the more he listens, the more he realizes that his memory isn’t as reliable as he thought. And it might only be by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he’ll finally be able to piece together his best friend’s story. And maybe have a chance to change his own.

Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Spectacular Now, Michelle Falkoff’s debut novel is an honest and gut-wrenching first novel about loss, rage, and what if feels like to outgrow a friendship that’s always defined you—and the struggle to redefine yourself.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Accustomed to operating outside of the major social scene, Sam is disappointed when a rare party he attends is ruined by a fight with his best friend, Hayden. Disappointment fades quickly when he discovers that Hayden killed himself afterward. Rocked by the tragedy, Sam is left puzzling over tracks that his friend left for a playlist and struggling to figure out who he is without Hayden around. Despite the heavy subject matter, the overall tone of the book is less somber than the title would indicate, and it is a quick, engaging read. Falkoff nails the war-zone mentality and painful symbiosis of high school friendships. The mixture of grief, anger, and guilt that Sam works through is realistic and well written, and his reactions to Hayden's music choices further illuminates not only his struggle but also how their friendship was beginning to change. The characters and concept work better than the plot—it gets an all-loose-ends-tied-up treatment at the end. This is especially frustrating as an entire eerie subplot is explained away in the course of a short paragraph. The strong characters, dialogue and the use of the playlist to structure the book make this a good pick for struggling readers. Hand this to fans of the movie Superbad and Spotify-obsessives.—Erinn Black Salge, Saint Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ

Review
“An absorbing and sensitive read.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

“Debut author Falkoff lightens the substantial topics of grief, bullying, and suicide with Sam’s engaging investigation.” (ALA Booklist)

“Realistic and well-written…The strong characters, dialogue and the use of the playlist to structure the book make this a good pick for struggling readers.” (School Library Journal)

“Falkoff treats a difficult topic with delicacy and care.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A nice premise with some truly powerful moments.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“[A] debut novel that limns the shifting boundaries of teen friendship, loyalty and identity. Playlist takes the expected conventions of stories about teen grief and turns them inside out, keeping readers guessing until the final chapters.” (Austin American-Statesman)

From the Back Cover

Here's what Sam knows: There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, Sam's best friend, Hayden, was dead. All he left Sam was a playlist and a note, sayingthat he took his own life.but what Sam doesn't know is: Why?

To figure out what happened, Sam has to rely on the playlist and his own memory. But the more he listens, the more he realizes that his memory isn't as reliable as he thought. A poignant, thought-provoking and incredibly engaging story
By Fiktshun
Michelle Falkoff’s PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a moving, thought-provoking, and wonderfully told story about a boy who’s trying to come to grips with his best and only friend’s suicide and understand just what his friend was trying to say through the playlist he made for him.

It is a story that tackles a tough subject, but does so in a way that is not too heavy, yet still weighty enough for readers to make an emotional connection with the story and its characters and to give them a number of things to think about.

It introduces a boy who is completely lost, alone, riddled with guilt, and desperate to understand what part he played in his friend’s decision. It follows him in the days and year after the suicide as he tries to interpret the meaning behind each song in the playlist and build a new life for himself.

The author lets both readers and her main character, Sam, try and solve the puzzle together about just what led Hayden to choose to end his life. Through Sam’s memories, the memories of a few others who knew him, and the songs on Hayden’s playlist, readers will get to know Hayden, come to empathize with his struggles, and perhaps understand why he did what he did.

And while this is in part a story about Hayden, it’s very much a story about Sam and everyone that Hayden left behind. PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD focuses on what happens to those whose lives Hayden impacted, how they cope with the loss, how they adapt, how they survive.

It is sad and sweet and heartfelt and heartbreaking. It asks the question “why,” and it reveals the answer in a way that feels a little bit like a mystery. It gives readers a peek into a friendship that was on the verge of changing, one with secrets, one that had its ups and downs, but one that still had a strong bond. And it invites readers to listen to the songs, which are announced at the beginning of each chapter, in order to feel even more connected.

Michelle Falkoff created a likable and thoughtful and interesting character in Sam to tell her story through. He was shy and awkward, like Hayden, but he was also much stronger than his friend, making for a compelling narrative. She wrote a story with a number of important messages, quietly delivered, that will keep readers thinking long after the story’s end. Ideas about forgiveness, and blame, and vengeance, and acceptance.

PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a poignant and engaging and relatable story and one that is a must for readers who enjoy incredibly touching, coming-of-age stories and those who know just what it’s like to be in Sam’s shoes.

an important read for both teen boys and girls
By Pink Amy
Grade: B

Sam's best and only friend left behind a playlist after committing suicide, a death for which he feels responsible. Maybe, just maybe that list of music holds clues to the reason why Hayden overdosed. Sam's sure their argument was the reason, as well as bullying from Hayden's own brother. But then he meets Astrid and her friends, starts coming out if his shell, and learns things about his buddy he never knew. Is finding new friends, and maybe even a girlfriend disloyal to Hayden?

I had a hard time getting into PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD, probably because I'm neither a video game nor music buff, Sam's two biggest interests. Once he started interacting with Astrid, her friends, his sister and her boyfriend, Sam became a much more interesting character and I embraced the story, but it was a slow start. The more I read, the more I liked Sam and I appreciated his strong moral compass. His sense of right and wrong helped him realize the strength he didn't realize he had, and he did grow as a character. Michelle Falkoff did a good job creating multidimensional characters, even the characters who seemed black and white had internal motivations of self preservation Sam hadn't originally understood. In the end, I liked and respected him. Falkoff captured the essence of a high school boy, a misfit who fit better than he realized.

Themes: suicide, bullying, family, siblings, first romance, music, video games, depression, grief

PLAYLIST FOR THE DEAD is a very good book that will appeal to both boys and girls covering important social and mental health topics.

great realistic fiction novel from this debut author
By Reading Bifrost
Mature-Content Rating: Language, Underage Drinking, Suicide, Mention of Homophobia, Violence

“Apparently I wasn’t the only one who was finding people surprising these days. It made me wonder whether everyone had these secret lives, these aspects of themselves that didn’t match who they seemed to be.”

Where to begin with this? For starters, don’t worry about the music. I did listen to some of the songs but it’s really not necessary to follow the story. The music has more to do with Sam and Hayden’s relationship than the actual storyline. The songs on the playlist are meant to help Sam understand why Hayden committed suicide, but after listening to it several times the songs only confuse him.

During the story Sam finds that Hayden had other friends he didn’t know about and secrets he was keeping even from his best friend. The bullying everyone was aware of, but slowly though-out the book Sam is introduced to new characters and new perspectives of the fate filled night at the party.

What I really loved about this book is that it’s psychologically light, but layered with the emotions those that are left behind face: guilt, blame, anger, sadness, loneliness, hopelessness. It could be possible that everyone and no one is to blame for Hayden’s death. The narrative by Sam also made me able to really understand his feelings at any point in the story. Just how a passage was written would leave me just as frustrated or confused as Sam. Bravo.

What I didn’t like is, like in so many other YA novels, the complete lack of parent interaction. It seems like a go-to fix-it for YA novelists if you need parents out of the way, then the kid has a no-show dad and mother who is either a) a waitress at a 24/7 dinner or b) a nurse with odd hours.

Overall, Playlist for the Dead is a great realistic fiction novel from this debut author. I recommend it for anyone who likes psychological YA fiction that’s on the tragic side.

Amazon.com Review
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it also has a lot to do with the beholder's cultural standards. In History of Beauty, renowned author Umberto Eco sets out to demonstrate how every historical era has had its own ideas about eye-appeal. Pages of charts that track archetypes of beauty through the ages ("nude Venus," "nude Adonis," and so forth) may suggest that this book is a historical survey of beautiful people portrayed in art. But History of Beauty is really about the history of philosophical and perceptual notions of perfection and how they have been applied to ideas and objects, as well as to the human body. This survey ranges over such themes as the mathematics of ideal proportions, the problem of representing ugliness, the fascination of the exotic and art for art's sake. Along the way, the text examines the intersection of standards of beauty with Christian belief, notions of the Sublime, the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and bourgeois culture. More than 300 illustrations trace the history of Western art as it relates, in the broadest sense, to the topic of beauty.

Yet despite its wealth of information, History of Beauty is an odd and unsatisfying book. Beginning with ancient Greece and ending with a too-brief chapter on "The Beauty of the Media," the text focuses exclusively (and unapologetically) on the Western world. Ultimately, it seems that "beauty" serves simply as a sexy peg on which to hang an abbreviated history of Western culture. Readers expecting a sophisticated treatment of the subject will be surprised at the textbook-like design, with numbered sections and boldfaced words keyed to small-type excerpts from writings by thinkers ranging from Boethius to Barthes. The main narrative (or perhaps the translation from the Italian?) can be ponderous and awkward. Only nine of the 17 chapters were written by Eco; the remainder are by lesser-known Italian novelist Girolamo de Michele. All in all, it looks as though someone had the bright idea of translating a textbook for Italian students into English, hoping to coast on the fame of Eco's name. --Cathy Curtis

From Publishers Weekly
This inspired book begins, after a little throat-clearing, with 11 verso-recto "comparative tables"—sets of contact-sheet–like illustrations that trace representations of "Nude Venus" and "Nude Adonis" (clothed sets follow) as well as Madonna, Jesus, "Kings" and "Queens" over thousands of years, revealing with wonderful brevity the scope of the task Eco has set for the book. What follows is a dense, delectable tour through the history of art as it struggled to cope with beauty's many forms. The text, while rigorous in its inquiries, is heavy on abstractions, which get amplified by stiff translation: "In short, the question was how to retable the debate about the Classical antitheses of thought, in order to reelaborate them within the framework of a dynamic relationship." The selections, however, are breathtaking—300 color illustrations, from Praxiteles to Pollock—and they grant the text the freedom to delve into their complex mysteries. Eco's categories for doing so (e.g., "Poets and Impossible Loves") and his historical breadth in elaborating them are creative and impressive respectively. Long quotations ranging from Plotinus and Petrarch to Xenophon and Zola allow each era to speak for itself, while Eco links them with his own epoch-leaping connections. Seen in terms of a timeless debate on the form and meaning of beauty, masterpieces like Titian's Sacred and Profane Loveor Cranach's Venus with Cupid Stealing Honey seem, if possible, even more immediate, and related to our own amorous profanities and thefts.

From Booklist
Given the sophistication of Eco's celebrated novels, the most recent being Baudolino (2002), and his scholarly work in semiotics, readers will expect his "review of ideas of Beauty over the centuries," as he so modestly characterizes this brimming and provocative volume, to be at once intellectually elaborate and great fun, and, indeed, it is. Focused primarily on the human form as depicted in works of art, beginning with the ancient Greeks and striding confidently into the age of the machine; elegantly designed and, yes, beautifully illustrated, Eco's mapping of our ever-changing definition of beauty draws on philosophy, theology, poetry, and science as he tracks beauty's permutations under the influence of ideas, mysticism, social upheaval, economics, politics, and technological innovation. A lover of language as well as image, Eco showcases literary beauty in the clarion writings he so judiciously excerpts. Erudite and ardent, Eco contemplates the complex relationship between nature and art, beauty and love, and vigorously explicates depictions of ugliness, without which our sense of beauty would not exist. An historical view of what moves "the eye of the beholder".
By David J. Gannon
Dostoyevsky once observed that "beauty is the battlefield where God and the devil war for the soul of man". In History of Beauty Umberto Eco provides an historical context to how that battlefield has changed over the past 3000 years or so.

This is a sumptuous, unusually high quality coffee table book. While its over 400 photographs are extremely engaging, the introductions and essays Eco provides are absorbing and just as illuminating as the pictures. Eco lists himself as editor, but that is false modesty. His writing here is excellent, erudite and informative and provides a lot of food for thought as one peruses the visuals.

As is to be expected from Eco, his essays cite philosopher that run the gamut from Aristotle and Plato through to Xenophon (though I did not see any Dostoyevsky references though that dark soul was seemingly compulsive about the mesmerizing qualities of beauty) and thusly provide an all encompassing review of differing concepts of what is beautiful by both geographically and chronologically.

This is a rich, beautiful book that will please the dedicated reader as well as the casual surfer who might flip through it.

If you want to upgrade the ambiance of your coffee table, this would be an excellent choice.

Thinking made clear
By John Seybold
Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.

Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!

Excellent introduction to the Aesthetics of Beauty
By Greg
Umberto Eco is one of the world's leading experts on aesthetics and art, as well as being an outstanding novelist in his own right.

This work on the history of beauty is aimed at a general audience rather than a specialised one, and as such it abounds more in beautiful works of art and illustrations rather than scholarly analysis of art itself. However, it still contains an excellent history of the idea of beauty, and how artists through the ages have tried to implement somewhat abstract ideas, while philosophers and theologians have abstracted from art to apply artistic and creative terms to entities such as Platonic Forms or God.

One of the most interesting developments in the history of beauty was the identification of beauty with reality as it was in itself. Platonists identified the beautiful with the Good or the One, and Christians planted these ideas onto God. The notion that God was the most beautiful entity that existed, that God could be represented in art, and also that the cosmos in many ways is God's work of Art, expressed itself in many great works of art, poetry and architecture in the medieval period.

With the Renaissance, the concept of beauty became more grounded in human and earthly realities, and one sees far more focus on the beauty of material objects, nature, and people, as they are rather than their ideal nature. Art becomes more and more focused on the material world until the 20th century when in the era of late capitalism, art itself has become a consumable commodity and the chief virtue of art seems to be to cause pleasant feelings to arise in the consumer (something Andy Warhol satirises a lot in his works of art). Yet even in this period, artists still manage to create works of creative beauty which capture both the beautiful and the ugly, as we now see them.

This work is essential reading for anyone curious about Art and its history, and its relation to abstract ideas.

Enjoyed this book immensely
By Keith Halonen
But then I've become a fan of Jennifer Shahade, whose focus exceeds the natural limits of the chess arena and tackles some serious sociopolitical aspects that affect the game in obtuse ways. In particular, Shahade speaks to women and girls who doubtless have shared experiences in the chess world. For those who may not know, the "double standard" and the "glass ceiling" are not exclusively confined to the "good old boys' clubs" of business and industry. If female chess students seem to require a bit more encouragment than their male counterparts, it is in no small way due to the harsh treatment they encounter in the chess milieu. Guys. The typical chess king (the heaviest piece) weighs all of a few ounces, not nearly so weighty as a brain of either gender! If we took all the games and chess diagrams in this book and reprinted them devoid of gender references, no one would be able to identify the gender of any of the players. It's that simple.

CUTE AND FLUFFY TITLE, BUT SERIOUS AND WORTHY INTRODUCTORY CONTENT
By A. Clark
"Play Like a Girl!" is a low-priced, hardback book with biographical snapshots
of 15 chess-playing lady experts, masters and grandmasters, brief descriptions
of selected chess tactics and 337 puzzles. Each chess personality is associated
with a given tactic, which is an interesting and refreshing approach.

Ms. Shahade goes beyond the usual introduction to tactics by including more
themes. Many books only cover seven or eight tactics, but 14 tactics are covered
here. (15 women for 14 tactics because two family-sisters are in the same
chapter). She failed to include the double check, which is my favorite tactic,
but I won't be selfish about that.

I have loved chess puzzles since my childhood, working out the ones by
Koltanowski in the newspaper every time. I could probably never have enough
chess puzzle books, but this one rises above the usual standard. It gives a
twist on the genre by promoting a selection of the strongest chess women of
all time. Some puzzles were such eye-poppers that I won't forget them!

There are as few as seven puzzles for a tactic (Chapter #12) and as many as 43
(Chapter #7). The puzzles are numbered with a chapter prefix, then in order, so
that the numbering gets restarted with each chapter. I do prefer consecutive
numbering, but younger readers would probably be less intimidated by having the
puzzles numbered in batches.

That being said, this is not just a book for girls, or boys and girls. It has a
very serious dimension, since the puzzles run in several different levels,
getting more difficult in each chapter toward the end. A beginning or intermediate
player could "grow into it" by putting it away for six months or a year, then
coming back to it.

Many games are between two women and many feature a man against a woman-- those
are always SERIOUS contests, not fluff, as was the case with a highly-promoted
tennis match decades ago. Ms. Shahade has some fun here and there-- smiley face
icons, the "Boo! Moment" but that just makes the book more approachable while
she brings home very heavy points about tactics and combinations.

In fact, at first I resented the title, since it seemed too cute and fluffy
(echoes of "Lilo and Stitch"). Yes, I had been avoiding the book. It wasn't in
our public library system, either. However, once I saw it listed as a used book
at a *fraction* of retail, my chess puzzle fever took over. (Have you stopped
laughing at me yet?)

I bought it and was impressed after the first reading. There's no "Look Inside"
feature for this book on Amazon's webpage, but that wouldn't have been enough--
there's just no substitute for holding a book in your hands and looking at all
of its sections. My used copy of "Play Like a Girl!" was even autographed, a
fine bonus!

I'm one of those chess players who likes to see the game behind the puzzle.
Aside from pure curiosity, it's often useful to see how the position arrived.
Also, some games have multiple benefits when analyzed. Further still, many games
showcase a variety of tactics-- not just the motif for the given chapter-- that
I find useful as a chess coach for my team members.

I only failed to find six of the games through free online databases, but I
appreciate the effort that Ms. Shahade has undertaken. She gives full names of
each player, so the search effort is less problematic than with other books. Ms.
Shahade is consistent with the players names (with one exception, see later),
but for game searchers like me, some clarifications need to be posted here:

==================================================================
Anja Susterman is also Anja Wagener; Elena Titova-Boric is also Elena Boric,
possibly due to married and maiden names.

Taimanov may also be spelled Tajmanov; Korchnoi is also Kortschnoj.

Players whose names use special characters may not need them (Polgr and
Garca) or they may need to be spelled differently (Roeder, Ruediger and
Jaenig for Rder, Rdiger and Jnig, respectively).

Players may have two, or even three, last names without hyphenation.

Wilhelm will also be William.

Jordi Magem Badals is also Jorge Magem Badals (??).

Many names are reversed, e.g., Hou Yifan is also Yifan Hou; Swathi Ghate is
Ghate Swathi.

Vasiltseva is also Vasilzeva; Tatiana is also Tatjana; Semyon is also Semen.

The game year may be early: 1930 for 1931 and 1992 for 1993 (some
tournaments span December and January?).
==================================================================

The book has a good blend of modern games, specifically from the 1920's to 2010.
She does include a fair sprinkling of her own games. In fact, I admire the way
she even included her losses. However, she mentions Rochelle Ballantyne twice,
but does not include any position or puzzle from any of Ms. Ballantyne's games.

There are some errors in the text, but only two are blatant. First, the table of
contents has all of the page numbers offset in varying amounts and it doesn't
include the chapter numbers at all. The other "Duh!" case is that Chapter 1 has
only 30 puzzles, but 31 solutions are listed for that chapter. So, the 31st
puzzle is missing-- big tease!

She mentions a double defense can sometimes be used against a double attack, but
doesn't show any or explain that any further. Another tease.

There are some specific, minor errata. Carlos Salvat should be Salvat Carles.
Elisaveta Bykova is given in two places, but she's Elisabeta Bykova on another
page. Puzzle #9.5 was in the Netherlands in 2007, not 2001. I'm suspicious that
Jordi Magem Badals (Puzzle 7.22) should be Jorge Magem Badals, which is the way
I found his name in several databases. Medina Parrilla's game with Becky Huang
was in Dallas as part of the 2008 5th Annual All Girls National Championships,
from April 25 to 27, 2008, not Chicago, 2009-- she won a $65K University of
Texas-Dallas scholarship for winning that tournament in the 18 and under section.

"Play Like a Girl!" has no index, no players index and no bibliography or
references of any kind. I would really like to have an index of players for
those 337 games. Nowadays, word processors can make an index so easily that this
is an unexplainable oversight. As to references, it's great for chess masters to
share their ideas about good books, not just tout their own.

The content of Chapter 9, Target, is too general. The KISS principle (Keep It
Short and Simple) is fine until more details are needed. "Play Like a Girl!" is
only 100 pages, so just a little more would have made the difference in such
a case. Any introductory book should be able to stand on its own, without a
coach's input for the first phase of its study.

I would have liked to see her identify at least some of the checkmates by their
classical names. For example, the checkmate she showed in Chapter 1 by Menchik
against Graf is a fine example of Blackburne's Mate.

Ms. Shahade indicates when a puzzle is variation from the actual game (although
that's missing for #1.21 and #6.6), but I would have liked to see her indicate
which puzzles were continuations beyond the actual game listed, such as #5.16.

Ms. Shahade often shows two diagrams for her initial problem demonstrations
(Chapters 2 thru 6, 13 and 15). This feature caters to beginners and those who
dislike setting up a board to visualize a solution. One should be sufficient.

As a chess coach, I frown on those who refuse to challenge themselves to see the
moves mentally. It's an important skill to develop early and to extend as your
experience grows. Plus, combining visualization with physically moving the
chessmen is highly conducive to internalizing important chess techniques. All of
the tactics included in "Play Like a Girl!" are vital to any aspiring chess
champion. Again, no fluff here!

The large format (roughly 9 by 11 inches) and no more than six diagrams per page
means that the diagrams are well-sized and clear.

There is commentary with many of the solutions. This is an excellent feature
missing from many other introductory books and expected from a chess master, as
Jennifer Shahade certainly is.

I know that the title was a marketing tactic, but I still have qualms about it.
There's no fluff in this book, but Ms. Shahade does have fun with it and provide
serious content simultaneously. Even the best chess puzzle books are useful but
boring to an extent. They're drill workbooks, with the Aha! moments overcoming
the tedium.

I can't get away from that "Lilo and Stitch" parallel here, although now it fits
better. Stitch had a high molecular density, so he could no more be soft and
fluffy than a baby lion or tiger. He kept insisting it was true, but I didn't
believe him for one minute.

Stitch made that claim repeatedly on the rental DVD for my children, who also
saw him as mean at first. Later, he learned to be a more complete person, just
as my experience with this book is now more complete. Lion or tiger cubs have
such heavy musculature that you can get bruised playing with them-- not like
house kittens. The substance of this book belies its title, then, in the same
way. If you come to this book, a workout awaits you, even if it is short by a
dozen or two pages.

To conclude, I have some reservations, but this coach does recommend it to his
chess team members of both genders. It earns four stars, since it's better than
many introductory tactics books. It fully deserves consideration by any beginner
and intermediate chess player. This book also comes with an honorable mission,
and is worthy of being purchased to support that cause. I'll be buying new
copies from now on. "Play Like a Girl!" is better than it appears to be and
deserves a wide audience.

A gold mine for anyone looking to learn and improve
By Keyser Soze
You can't ask for more than this - tactical concepts, plenty of exercises for each one, and info on great women players who should be a lot more famous than they are. Miss Shahade has written an absolute killer of a book here and anyone looking to improve their game should start with this one instead of wasting money on an endless series of books on openings (I believe it was GM Short who one said "Opening theory has the shelf life of a ham sandwich.") This book is worth every penny and then some.

Branch Today, Gone Tomorrow, by Brett King

In the wake of the global financial crisis, retail bankers face another equally challenging shift to their business in the near term – the demise of the branch. In the UK, one bank branch has closed everyday since 1990. In the US, transaction volume in-branch will be down almost 60% between the period 2006-2015. In developed economies, consumer visits to bank branches have been down 80-90%. Yet today most banks spend more than 80% of their channels budget on branch real estate, staffing and support. In a world where the fastest growing interactions with banks are through Internet, mobile phones and social media, what does the bank of 2015 look like? How will we support a 50% reduction in number of branches in the next few years? Where will all the tellers go, and what happens to all that real estate? Branch Today, Gone Tomorrow is a detailed, multi-faceted business case for the reprioritization of branch banking in the channel mix. It explores economics, behavioural shifts, trust issues facing banks, new retail distribution models and drivers challenging the branch-centric models of yesteryear. Branch Today is not about getting rid of every bank branch you have. It’s about understanding how banking changes when branches are no longer at the centre of acquisition, service and channel strategy. About the author Brett King is the author of the bestselling book Bank 2.0, founder of the world’s first mobile direct bank Movenbank. He advises the world’s biggest banks on innovation, customer experience and distribution strategy.

Relevant and Thought-Provoking Read
By Joanna Rosenberg
This succinct and well thought out statement on the future of the branch really applies to many areas of our lives. From banking to retail to travel and entertainment, our preferences and demands are shaping the way that established businesses are approaching the market. From these preferences and demands drives technological innovations, especially through social media. Can't wait to see how the branch saga unfolds and can't wait for King's next book!

What are branches for anyway?
By Mr. Matthew R. Weidler
The power of this little book is in the research the Brett King sites regarding banking transactions and how they have changed as a result of the digital revolution. Regardless of the degree to which you agree that branches are dying, the statistics sited will give you valuable insights for developing a branch strategy in the digital age. Anyone responsible for credit union or bank operations would be remiss not to read this book and its companion "Bank 2.0."

Fair warning: its shorter then you would initially expect; but that's a good thing for busy financial institution managers. It is condensed to just the important research and minimizes the prognosticating about the future of banking, allowing you to draw your own conclusions from the research.
