YOU BOUND ME TO YOU FOR MY PROTECTION

This is a brilliantly written dark erotic romantic suspense story with an element of horror. Human trafficking of women being held, trained, forced into submission to be sold to the highest bidder. Most of the women were loners, without close family or friends, so when they come up missing, not too much effort is placed on finding them. One woman, Laura Hurst, did not fit that profile but Marco knew that she and Dan Westbury were childhood friends, so she becomes a pawn in this evil event. The plot of this story kept me on the edge of my seat with all the mystery and suspense, depravity, danger, and secrets. The dialog is honest and raw, the characters will grab you and not let you go. There is so much depth to this story and it isn’t an easy journey to take, some will live and some will die, and life will go on. Warning, this story has forced BDSM, corporal punishments, enemas, oral and anal sex, piercings and branding, nonconsensual sexual acts in training women to be sexual slaves. In spite of all that, it does have a positive ending.

Tense, not sensual, hard to get through for me...

I really wanted to like this one. The author's story telling skills are superior, and I love a good D/s story. I just had a few too many problems with this one. Though the H, Dan, kept trying to explain to his employers the difference between BDSM that is consensual and flat out rape/abuse, it seemed that the author didn't realize the difference. No one who goes through what Laura did would be not only seemingly unscathed, but turned on for a good part of the time while being raped, whipped, and otherwise terrorized. I just couldn't suspend reality enough to believe that after all the humiliating things that were done to her, Laura would still think she was in love with Dan and they could live HEA. I didn't find any of the book sensual, and found myself tense during the entire read. I would give the author another chance, however.

Hard to read, but so rewarding!!!

I have so many feelings about this book, I'm not quite sure where to start!! First of all, like the other reviews have stated, this has a very dark story to tell. But, it is the story that is so dark and horrible, not our main characters! Both Laura and Dan find themselves in the middle of a modern day slave trading ring. Dan has been in it for quite some time as part of a sting operation and Laura is kidnapped and brought into it because she knows Dan, and someone on the inside wants to trip him up. Neither of them have ANY choice in what they have to do/endure in this hell they find themselves in!! As awful as the subject matter is, this author has managed to tell such an intriguing and heart-wrenchingly explosive story that I simply couldn't stop reading!! It was SO very,very worth the read!!!

**Note: This story is not for babies. It can be crude, and has jokes about butts, poo, and drunk people. It also has a bit of cartoony violence. There is no swearing or sexual activity. If this story had a MPGG rating it would probably be PG, and would be comparable to a modern episode of the Simpsons.**

Great read!! Super fun and entertaining!

while I was reading this book I was thinking I can see my self reading this to my children. Giving them a new perspective on the way stories can be told or written. I would say this is in the same league as Jon Scieszka's retold fairy tales!

but this was too good not to

I don't often review products on amazon, but this was too good not to! It was such a great read! This book made for a fun and hilarious afternoon read! Its a unique and clever way to tell the story of snow white and has many unexpected hilarious moments. Not only was I (a college student) able to enjoy it, but I was also able to have fun reading it with my nephews! Great book for people of all ages! I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read more by this author! Such a fantastic and unexpected find!

Please, help me find Pablo!

I must say how disappointed I am that this book is out of print and difficult to find. As other's have said, this is one of my favourite and most memorable books from my childhood. Not only is it a cute and funny story but it gives children several important messages: follow your dreams, respect others that are different, find your own niche in the world, be careful when building structures using temperature sensitive materials in rapidly changing climates, etc.
I began looking for a copy of it a year and a half ago, without success. I ended up writing a jazz tune called "Pablo's Journey" (I'm a jazz composer). I hope that it will soon be back in print. I now have a 14-month old son and I would like to get a copy for him.

I love this book !!

This has been my favorite book ever since I was a kid. I read it until the book literally fell apart. Now, 30 years later, I was thrilled when my Aunt found a copy of this book for me. I just recently learned that this book was re-released in 1996 under the name "The Penguin WHO Hated the Cold" (as opposed to the name "The Penguin THAT Hated the Cold"). I am sure that anyone who reads this book will fall in love with it.

Pablo the Penguin

Surprisingly enough, this book is about a penguin named Pablo who hates the cold. One day Pablo decides that he has had enough of this cold weather. "It is silly to be chilly. I will go where I can be warm all the time." Pablo decides to try skiing farther north, but the stove strapped to his back causes more problems than Pablo expects. His next attempt to leave also fails, but by the third time he has come up with a reasonably good plan: he turns the ice his igloo sits on into a boat and sails away. This causes problems later, but he still manages to find a nice warm island home where he lives happily ever after.
The story flows nicely and has no awkward spots. The pictures are wonderful. I never realized just how expressive a penguin's face could be until I saw this book. The pictures are bright, colorful, bold, and simple. The whole book is a lot of fun. How could one not have fun with the idea of a penguin that hates the cold? I love this book for it.

Proceeding chronologically from the first Neolithic "bun bricks" to relatively high-tech contemporary forms, Cambridge University art historian Campbell and documentary photographer Pryce reveal the building blocks of the Coliseum, the Taj Mahal, the Florence Cathedral and the Chrysler Building, as well as more humble abodes. Pryce's photos are stunning, making up the bulk of the 600 illustrations here (570 in color) and miraculously capturing the outlines of each brick, even in such massive structures as the Great Mosque in Isfahan, Iran, or the beautiful Buddhist temples of Pagan in Myanmar. He also documents brickmaking in the Bulmer Brickworks in Suffolk, England, as a worker moulds, "strikes," "drops" and dusts large, ochre, rectangular bricks. The photos, as well as excellent period technical illustrations, are laid out in compelling two-page spreads, each with subheading (e.g., "Petrus Cuypers and the Gothic Revival in Holland") in this 9.75" 12.5" book, and are matched by Campbell's clear and intense historiography. In Sumerian times, he notes, offerings of food and drink were presented to "the brick god," who was "represented in the ritual by the first brick." More recently, mortar for the foundations of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was mixed with "a broth of barley and bark of elm" and sacred relics, accompanied by prayers, placed between every 12 bricks. A lack of detail on Chinese use of brick, particularly early brickwork, is a drawback, but the Islamic world is well-covered, and Campbell's refreshing focus on the brickmakers (often family-run businesses) and bricklayers themselves shows how techniques were kept secret to prevent early forms of industrial espionage, now posing a challenge to contemporary scholars trying to figure out how bricks were engineered even as late as the Victorian era.

All in all it's just another brick in the wall ... NOT! This book is fabulous. I bought it for my dad who has been a bricklayer since he was a teenager. He is fascinated by the history. The photos are also magnificent. A very fine read!

Particularly nice book design and photography

The author writes easily, seems to know everything, and has a completely unpretentious style. He also chose his subjects well, with many less-well-known examples and only a few icons. As a historian, he occasionaly suffers from their tendency to document, say, the names and ruling periods of the Middle Ages Persian kings before getting to the interesting parts about the use of brick in that era. The photographs are all similar to the one on the cover--deep colors and bright sunlight--and their consistency adds a nice touch. The organization of the book was good too, presenting the subject in manageable bites.

Incisive look into a distorted world.

This is a good novel -- NOT brilliant as sometimes described. It's a good character study of the kind of all-encompassing obsession and distortion in an ordinary family where one memory has an extraordinary gift. It could well influence the way you watch the Olympic gymnastics in the future.
The so-called "plot twists" were, for me, telegraphed almost from the beginning. But that's not really the point of the novel. It's incorrect to see it as a mystery or a page turner. I actually wish that the author had simply focused on the story of the family and the one gifted child, and what that does to a family. The type of distortions and dangers described here, I get the feeling, are much more common in the "real world" than we might suspect. Although one of the points of this novel is that there's very little "real world" involved in world class gymnastics (and I would add, any other world where gifted children live their whole lives in competition with others like themselves.)

So wish it were better

How I wish Megan Abbott could write another novel like her class DARE ME. Although her writing is so captivating, the story was unbelievable. There was no way this young gymast could find the time to do what happens in the novel. No one is really that interesting and the moms are all bitcches. Abbott needs to slow down and write a novel worthy of her great talents.

Not Sure What the Uproar's About

Hmmm. A great review in the NYTimes made me get this book, though it isn't my usual type. And there was some good writing. The promise of an intriguing plot amidst the backdrop of high stakes gymnastics. And yet there's so amateurish about it, overblown language ("obscurely primitive" to describe a character's expression? "Pink" used way too often to describe young gymnasts. Way too many "queasy" moments...) sooooo much gratuitous drinking and old married hot sex with a husband who, it we are constantly reminded, didn't really WANT the star gymnast daughter from the get-go.. A blind ditzy fool about her "handsome" husband, who just seemed like a manipulative Svengali dad to me. I get that the younger sibling might be ignored in the face of the sister's stardom, but really Katie's constant abandonment of him--it just made me NOT CARE what happened to this woman. And everyone, even the 7 yr olds, even the so called happily married mid lifers--gaga over the ripple-ab'ed 20 year old. Ew. It all felt too shallow and boring to be engaging. Probably the last thriller I'll read for a while (though really, all great books are thrillers, I'll stay clear of those written expressly to supposedly, uh, keep us guessing).
