Laura was just eighteen years of age when she fled her family home on the Serbian Kosovo border at the height of the former Yugoslavian conflict. Her father felt she would be safer in Kosovo, free from the rape camps, massacres and ethnic cleansing that took place on their doorstep, the streets of the capital patrolled by US peacekeeping forces. Reluctantly she made the long journey through the mountains and eventually arrived in Pristina. Neither Laura or her father were aware she had entered a city one US delegate described, "as one vast crime scene." She had no idea what terrors lay ahead, as she crossed the path of 'The Chief', a self professed freedom fighter in the Kosovan Liberation Army. On the face of it The Chief' claimed to be fighting a noble cause. Behind closed doors he was the mastermind of a huge operation dealing in organ harvesting, people trafficking and prostitution and his evil gang raped tortured and killed at will. Laura had stumbled through the gates of hell. Follow her quite unbelievable true story of kidnap, murder, brutality and abuse set against the backdrop of one of Europe's most recent and bloody conflicts and how she encountered some of the most evil men on the planet. This is Laura's story of courage and hope and how some of the most evil men on the planet did not break her spirit.

You can't help but connect with her as you turn the pages of this riveting book...

I couldn't put the book down and when I finally finished it at 2AM one morning, I burst into tears. It was incredibly disturbing for me to read about the depth of cruelty of some human beings in this world, but what is really precious about this book and what gives us hope, is the presence of real-life-heroes and witnessing the resilience and beauty of the human spirit, through Laura's experience. You can't help but connect with her as you turn the pages of this riveting book, and you quickly feel a deep sense of empathy for her suffering and agony, but also real admiration for her courage.
The fact this is a true story makes it even more poignant. What comforted me however, was knowing Laura found the strength and will to survive her horrible ordeal and that she lived to tell the tale. This book is absolutely worth a read, not just because it is a captivating story, but also because you will learn the cold truth about what happened in that part of the world at the height of the former Yugoslavian conflict.

A story of love and strength

Laura is actually a friend of mine, so this made pretty hard reading much of the time. But it's ultimately a story of resilience and I felt so proud to know her after reading it because she has now created the most beautiful life, full of love, with a loving family and many friends. She is also so positive and loving, you would never in a million years guess she had been through this in her past.

This is an important book...it rips at your heart and ultimately raises you up. Laura's story is about the immense beauty of the human spirit. In the face of horrendous circumstance, and up against some of the most atrocious human behaviour, she not only survived, but emerged, or remained, a beautiful person. It's an inspiring story - and so essential in these troubled times. Read this book!

it is better to be able to

Am studying for my rectification. Am finding this is the only study source I'm using that help me keep things in my head. (If I don't pass it will be because I didn't spend enough time studying not the fault of the book.)

Other study sources I'm using:
1) 3 years of PREP questions: the long paragraph explanations with those questions make my eyes glaze over. Plus, it is better to be able to, as this book does, compare/contrast the similar conditions that will be among the answer choices.
2) MedStudy flashcards: Are a bit too simplistic and doe not give the level of detail on the conditions. Not sure they are worth paying twice as much money for 1/4 as much info -- this study guide book seems a more comprehensive source. But the flashcards are easy to grab a bunch of and throw in my purse or bag
3) Cleveland Clinic Intensive Review of Pediatrics: Am realizing that purchase may have been the least useful in context of other study aids. Using that one the least as am prioritizing doing PREP questions instead.

Positive:
-There are many decision trees/algorithms to help you differentiate similar diseases/conditions and think through appropriate next test (e.g. metabolic disease diagnosis and process of elimination)
-There are tables for a quick review of the list of disease or compare/contrast of two or more related diseases (CD vs UC, or night terror vs nightmare, poisoning substance and matched antidotes, conditions that could be mistaken for ADHD, etc)
-I'm recognizing, in bullet points, the same things in the PREP explanations, but in a much more accessible and easier to memorize format
(When I go back to redo a PREP question I got wrong, I can't remember the right answer from the description. But if, after getting a PREP question wrong, I go to the same section in this book, I remember what I was supposed to have learned.)
-Last few pages has a "Last minute review" that describes the likely clinical scenario for each disease -- wish this were a booklet that could be separated from book to carry for quick and easy review
-Has a good number of pictures which are pretty good quality
-Has EKGs, x-rays, histology pictures, diagrams (like various salter harris fractures), etc.
-The text is clear, concise, easy to read, well organized.
-Reviews pathophysiology that the PREP questions seem to ask

Negative: None really except, maybe:
Not a small or light book so not easy to carry around to read on the subway.

good reference book - along works along with lectures on youtube

I use this more as a reference to study from and not my main source to study for peds board 2nd re-certification (coming up in 2 months) since I bought this after I already started studying using another source - I already took the first boards 17 years ago and 1st recertification 10 years. I mainly use Surfing your way to recertification only b/c I used the laughing your way for my first recertification which I did very well on and also did lots of AAP Prep questions - about 5 years worth and the ABP practice questions they provide. I also use Youtube and search up diseases I've never seen in person and Osama Naga also has Youtube lectures that tie in with this book of which I also review as well for some chapters. It's much harder to study as years pass. This study guide covers more stuff that the ABP content guidelines does not cover. Of what I covered so far since I'm not done studying, I liked the metabolic chapters and the approach he outlines.

The book is above my expectation. This is the best pediatric board review among other books out there. Easy and fast to read. I like the bullet point format, and the last chapter; last minute review is brilliant. It is the perfect tool, and easy to retain. Also, the book is linked to a Great!!! Tool of a sequence of free videos on YouTube made by the same author. Good writing, technical problems

Very high quality writing (what I've read so far), but the Kindle version is marred by a missing link to the table of contents. You have to go to the cover, then page forward. I bought this originally for the Jack McDevitt story, and then couldn't remember why I bought it because the "first" page is the beginning of the first story. This is my first attempt at reading a magazine format on the Kindle. Another important feature that's missing is that there's no indication of length. When I read SF magazines I like to pick the stories based on the time I have to read. I realize that page numbers would be useless -- maybe a word or sentence count?

Go Ravens!

This collection of fantasy and science fiction short stories has a mix of both original and reprints that vary in quality. “Dry Bite” by Will McIntosh is an interesting take on zombie stories, one that focuses on the survivor’s interactions with their deceased loved ones, and was such a good read. D. Thomas Minton’s “The Schr�dinger War” hides the main character’s pain inside an endless loop of war, and really underlines the horror of both.

“Ragged Claws’ by Lisa Tuttle was just okay, with the full impact of the story hinging on the reveal at the end. The protagonist goes to a club and targets a group of young people, and focuses on their conversation about the mythical Colony some have migrated to. “Angelus” by Nina Allan was a much more solid story, although I found some of the details of the world confusing. Two men, once friends, meet in very different circumstances and discuss the woman that changed both their lives. Gene Wolfe’s "Suzanne Delage" totally confused me. The narrator recounts a woman he knew all his life but didn’t know until he saw her daughter, all the while meditating on the meaning of life.

“Homecoming” by Seanan Mcguire was the real standout of the bunch. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t like sports, and I LOVED this story. It’s the most original reworkings of a popular myth I’ve read in a while.

I love "Lightspeed" -- This one, not so much

Let me be the first to say that I just love "Lightspeed" magazine. I have purchased every single one, and enjoyed them all with very few exceptions.

This particular issue, well, I would say that if it's your first time reading "Lightspeed," pick another one -- any other one. They're all great. But this issue I found a little too relentlessly grim. I know I can't expect to love each and every issue ever; hell, maybe that's the only kind of stories people are writing just now. This magazine is always a terrific value for the money, and I will continue to buy every issue. Just don't get your first overall impression of the magazine from this issue.

Incidentally, I want to mention also that "Lightspeed" has consistently awesome covers. Looking forward to next month.

Fortunately, his character Jack Reacher, "the literary heir to Mike Hammer, Sir Lancelot and, perhaps, Jack Paladin" (Denver Post), shows no signs of cooling off. Critics applaud Child for bringing fresh observations and endearing quirks to Reacher's character (keep an eye out for the clothing in this latest effort), who was first introduced to readers in Killing Floor (1997) and most recently appeared in One Shot (2005). The books also contain a sense of humor, which contrasts nicely, at times ironically, with scenes of intense violence and cerebral intrigue.

*Starred Review* Child's last two Jack Reacher novels (One Shot, 2005, and The Enemy, 2004) have emphasized procedural detail rather than the high-octane action that gave the series its identity. There's still plenty of procedure, but this time the gearshift is back in overdrive: "Reacher, alone in the dark. Armed and dangerous. Coming back." Former military cop Reacher does his level best not to come back: he lives off the grid (no address, no belongings), but his instincts keep driving him toward solving other people's problems, the kind that won't stay solved without violence. Here, he's having an espresso in Greenwich Village when a man walks across the street, gets in a car, and drives away. It happens every day, but it's not always a kidnapper picking up the ransom. Soon Reacher is involved in helping a ruthless mercenary find his wife and stepdaughter before the kidnappers tie up loose ends. There's a lot more to it than that, though, and it takes three-fourths of the novel before Reacher figures out who the bad guys are. Like all the best thrillers, this one is about more than pace: yes, the narrative propels you forward with a locomotive's thrust, but Child never loses sight of the small detail or the human fabric--not unlike Reacher in the dark, armed and dangerous, intent on the action in front of him but always aware of the sights and sounds to his sides and behind him. The hard way – is there any other?

If there is a moral to this story, it is that if you are a bad guy – really bad – it would behoove you not to hire Reacher to help you; eventually he will turn his laser-like, penetrating attention on you. Strangely enough, Reacher is in a café one evening on a busy street in NYC and just happens to observe a man cross the street and drive away an illegally parked car. Big deal, but the next day he is in the same café and is approached by an ex-military type wanting to know if he had observed said event. Soon he is meeting Edward Lane, the head of a band of mercenary soldiers, who claims that the car held ransom money, payment to kidnappers of his dazzling wife and young daughter. Well, of course, since Reacher is an investigator extraordinaire, he agrees to help Lane, something that Lane probably wishes never happened.

Reacher knows nothing about Lane, but soon he happens to meet the sister of Lane’s first wife, Anne, now deceased, and an ex-FBI agent Lauren Paulding, who investigated Anne’s disappearance. A troublesome picture of Lane begins to emerge, especially his ruthlessness. Now Reacher is on full alert; he enlists Pauling in his search for the kidnappers but wonders what Lane is hiding. Eventually, after sorting through the disconnects, of all places, the case leads to a farm outside London.

As usual the story is fast-moving and compelling. Of course, Reacher uses his immense physical skills to advantage, but it is his mind that gives him the ultimate advantage over his opponents, which generally means surviving the extremely dangerous situations in which he repeatedly finds himself. As per his custom, Reacher is back on the road with his toothbrush only hours after righting the wrongs that are eventually revealed.

Might want to pass on the abridged version book on CD

Please note; this is a review on the ABRIDGED version audio CD. I really can't recommend this although the price is reasonable, and the unabridged version CD is sky high. However, the abridged version at times is suddenly very choppy. The reader (Kerry Shale) is actually very good, except for Reacher's character, which is annoying in the way the voice is done.

Meanwhile, I am a huge fan of Dick Hill who reads the unabridged version. I am guessing this version is up to par. Why it is so much more expensive than Hill's other Reacher CDs, I can't say.

This not the worse audio CD (and I listen to them on my long daily commutes), but it is not that good either.

Who is the bad guy?

I have never been disappointed in any of the Jack Reacher series. This one is no exception. I've read it twice (I had run out of new material) and found it as intriguing the second time around.
Jack is drawn into a kidnapping by simply sitting and drinking a cup of espresso while enjoying the sounds of New York. He sees someone leave a car unattended in front of a fire hydrant, sees another man take the car and leave. Not so mysterious, right? But wait, this act leads to some very distinctly mysterious happenings, A mercenary, Edward Lane, wants to hire him to find his wife, Kate, and stepdaughter, Jade, who have been kidnapped. Several million dollars later, which Lane pays without blinking an eye, Reacher feels something else is going on. Something is "off."
The journey takes him and his new temporary partner, Pauling, an ex-FBI agent-turned-PI down a twisted path of deceit, torture, and death. Almost too late, Jack realizes what is really going on and---well, read it. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author
JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, has helped patients practice the art of surrender to achieve emotional freedom for more than two decades. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller Emotional Freedom and the bestsellers Positive Energy, Judith Orloff’s Guide to Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight. Unchain my heart

What an important book! So many of us are slaves to irrationality, letting ourselves be led around like sheep by our emotions. To be truly free, a person must have "the power to act, think or feel as one wants without hindrance or restraint." This book has valuable lessons to help you be a master of your emotional domain.

The more you know about your emotional health, the easier it will be for you to control it. If you can put your finger on what triggers your logical, rational brain to take a vacation and put your feelings in control, the better you'll be able to stop it from happening. For example, this book has taught me an important lesson: I'm an empath. No, not poor Agatha from Minority Report. An empath "feels everything, sometimes to an extreme." On the positive side, this means I'm intuitive about other people's thoughts and feelings, which makes it easy to relate to people and make friends. On the downside, I act as an "emotional sponge, absorbing people's negativity." I can be so sensitive to emotions, I feel like "a wire without insulation." I've always thought of it as having no skin; you are laid open and completely vulnerable emotionally. Now that I know I'm an empath, I can understand better how to control these negatives.

Especially helpful are the Emotional Action Steps spread throughout the book. These are boxed segments that contain bulleted strategies you can implement and practice. I also liked the Emotional Vampire Survival Guide, to help you survive those people who suck you dry emotionally.

This wise book is chock full of advice. Much of it is usable immediately. Although it leans toward New Agey spiritualism, the bulk is good old-fashioned common sense articulated in a smartly organized book.

A lot of info but not very much depth

This book tries to be a totally comprehensive guide to dealing with all the possible types of negative energy in your life, which is noble.

Unfortunately, by trying to cover every nook and cranny (energy vampires, depression, loneliness, grief, envy...), she skimps on actual, helpful, practical advice.

It doesn't really do a suffering person much good to hear, "Let it go," or "Confront the person from a place of center," when the whole point is that the emotionally stuck person doesn't know HOW to let it go or HOW to find their center in the midst of chaos. Duh!

Positive Energy, her last book, was a lot more focused and helpful. Emotional Freedom is good if you're looking for a sort of overall guide to what *might* be ailing you, but if you're emotionally overwhelmed already, forget it.

About the Author
Dr. Robert L. Mathis is professor emeritus of management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Born and raised in Texas, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. in Management and Organization from the University of Colorado. At UNO, he has received the "Excellence in Teaching" award. Dr. Mathis has co-authored several books and published numerous articles covering a variety of topics. He also has held national offices in the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and served as president of the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). In addition, he is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by HRCI. He has had extensive consulting experiences with organizations of all sizes and in a variety of areas. Firms assisted have been in the telecommunications, telemarketing, financial, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and utility industries. Dr. Mathis has extensive specialized consulting experience in establishing or revising compensation plans for small- and medium-sized firms. Internationally, he has consulting and training experience with organizations in Australia, Lithuania, Romania, Moldova, and Taiwan.

Dr. John H. Jackson is professor of management at the University of Wyoming. Born in Alaska, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University. He worked in the telecommunications industry in human resources management for several years before completing his PhD in Management and Organization at the University of Colorado. During his academic career, Dr. Jackson authored six other college texts and more than 50 articles and papers, including those appearing in ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, and HUMAN RESOURCES PLANNING. He has consulted with a variety of organizations on HR and management development matters and has served as an expert witness in a number of HR-related cases. At the University of Wyoming, he served four terms as department head in the Department of Management and Marketing. Dr. Jackson received the university's highest teaching award and has been recognized for his work with two-way interactive television for MBA students. Two Wyoming governors have appointed him to the Wyoming Business Council and the Workforce Development Council. Dr. Jackson serves as president of Silverwood Ranches, Inc.

Dr. Sean R. Valentine is the University of North Dakota alumni leadership and ethics professor and professor of management. Originally from Texas, he received a BS in Management/Human Resources from Park University, a BS in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management from New Mexico State University, an MBA in Business Administration from Texas State University, and a DBA in Management from Louisiana Tech University. He was employed in the hospitality industry for many years and was an officer in the Army National Guard. During his academic career, Dr. Valentine published more than 75 articles in journals such as HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RELATIONS, HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT QUARTERLY, EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTING RESEARCH, and BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH IN ACCOUNTING. His primary research and teaching interests include human resource management, business ethics, and organizational behavior, and he has received numerous awards and other recognition for his work. He also has consulted with a variety of organizations on different business matters.

Dr. Patricia A. Meglich is associate professor of management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Born and raised in Ohio, she earned her BSBA from Bowling Green State University; MBA from Cleveland State University, and PhD from Kent State University. Prior to entering academia, she spent 20 years as the human resources director for an automotive supplier, where she designed and implemented talent management programs and participated in numerous acquisitions and business process reengineering initiatives. Dr. Meglich was active in professional activities with SHRM and was awarded the national SHRM Award for Professional Excellence. She is certified SPHR and SHRM-SCP. She has published numerous articles in scholarly journals such as EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE JOURNAL OF APPLIED BUSINESS and ECONOMICS. She has developed several learning modules and course materials for SHRM and has received a number of teaching awards at UNO. She serves as a visiting professor at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and the Osnabruck University of Applied Sciences. She is committed to bridging research to the practice of HR and ensuring that HR professionals have timely, relevant information needed to successfully lead their organizations to success.

A very badly done ebook :- (

I have returned this for a refund... It is the worst kindle book I've ever gotten!
The table of contents lists page numbers but is not linked to the text. Actually, there are only the line numbers shown in the progress bar, no page numbers. Also, the code samples are screen shots that are too small to read without zooming in. But zoom in and then you aren't able to see the text that explains the code. I quit trying to follow this travestry after just a few hundred lines... Maybe the paperback version is better and worth the money, but not this kindle edition. I don't know who Jody had do the ebook but they've totally blown it. The table of contents makes the book sound worthwhile and I may try the paper version, but I'll be keeping the box to return it if it isn't any better done that this kindle edition.
