Andrew F. Hayes, PhD, is Professor of Quantitative Psychology at The Ohio State University. His research and writing on data analysis has been published widely, and he is the author of Introduction to Mediation, Moderation, and Conditional Process Analysis and Statistical Methods for Communication Science, as well as coauthor, with Richard B. Darlington, of Regression Analysis and Linear Models. Dr. Hayes teaches data analysis, primarily at the graduate level, and frequently conducts workshops on statistical analysis throughout the world. Good stuff but missing a good output explanation

I had been looking forward to this book for some time because I was interested in learning how to conduct these kinds of analyses but I found it hard to teach myself the process by reading the existing articles. It does a nice job of explaining the basics of the analyses and Process is a great macro for SPSS. However, I was also really hoping that the book would contain a detailed breakdown of what information is contained on the output and how to interpret it. Unfortunately, it doesn't have that. It has sample output but it doesn't really go through and explain everything that's contained in the output. It seems to just assume that you know how to read the output which is a little odd for a book that's meant to be an introduction.

Worth keeping within easy reach of my desk

For those new to the topic, Hayes' book provides a great introduction to moderation and mediation analyses; for those already familiar with the basics (or more than the basics), it serves as an important reference and refresher. In my field (consumer behavior), the PROCESS macro introduced by this book is quickly becoming the gold standard for testing psychological processes. In addition to showing *how* to use PROCESS, Hayes also explains *why* and demystifies the "black box" in a quite readable manner. (I leisurely read it cover to cover over the last week or two, and could've done so much faster had I been in a rush.) Hayes uses lots of real examples, explained and interpreted in depth, and provides the sample data and code so that readers can replicate the analyses for themselves. He also precisely dispels long-held myths regarding mean-centering and testing the total effect, among others. I'll be keeping this book within easy reach of my desk.

Very clear and relevant text on mediation and moderation

Excellent, accessible explanation of how to optimally test relationships between variables in regression. I teach Ph.D.-level statistics courses and am considering assigning this text in the future. Hayes has done a true service to science by writing this book and the associated macro tools.

Powerful and Suprising

What struck me was the utter improbability of Mariano's journey. His pre-Internet village as if from another century. Didn't speak English, never been on a plane, never heard of Babe Ruth. He came from nothing and ended up on the mountaintop. And the great thing is that after reading this book you know he's just what he seems, a special man. A generous spirit. Kind. But more too, perceptive and wise. He's quiet, but it surprised me how tough he is. Read the Cano stuff. Mariano Rivera, the ultimate modern Yankee. What a story. I received it as a gift. Perfect for this Yankee fan.

No Game Greater than Baseball

This book covers a man's journey from hardship, toil and heartbreak on a small fishing boat in Panama to rising as a star pitcher with an infamous team in the Major Leagues. It reminds me why I love the game so much. A game where anyone - no matter their back ground in life can demonstrate greatest . It is another story of America and it's favorite game: A tale of a kind hearted, religious, and humble man's rise to greatest.

Rivera was signed by the Yankees at age 20 when he was discovered playing on local teams in Panama. He developed and rose to invent a pitch known as the "cutter" - almost impossible to hit. His talent carried him to a long and successful career. Some may believe this book to be "sugar coated" (not typical of the scandalous books of today), but I found it to be refreshing, and it has sparked my interest in baseball this season. A story of a simple man's opportunity to rise to unbelievable heights - a story only found in America.

Personal, Moving Story of the Pitcher and His Faith

He has been called the greatest relief pitcher in the history of baseball, and he holds the current record for most games saved (652). This book is his story as he would tell it. There are no skeletons in the closet and no bridges burned between teammates. Rivera is an honest, upbeat man who played his best (which was better than most).

There's a story about finding his place on the mound. He says one of the great ironies about sports is that trying too hard to succeed is about the surest way to bring on failure.

"When John Wetteland signed with the Rangers, the Yankees put me in as their closer. I didn’t let on at the time, but I really wanted to show everybody that I could do it. The ’97 season didn’t start well, and Mr. T. (Joe Torre) and the pitching coach, Mel Stottlemyre, called me in.

"I said, 'I’m sorry I’ve blown so many games.'

"They said, 'Mo, do you know what you need to do? You need to be Mariano Rivera. That’s all. Nothing more, nothing less. It looks to us like you’re trying to be perfect.'

"I walked out of that office feeling 10,000 tons lighter. They wanted me to be myself. That’s when I devised a little trick. I wasn’t going to think about the inning or anything else. When I’m on the mound, I have the ball, the hitter has a bat, and my only job is to get him out one pitch at a time. The payoff was immediate. I stopped trying to be Wetteland and demanding perfection, and I run off twelve straight saves."

And sometimes, as on anonymous platforms like Yik Yak, what they see instead is a depressing cesspool of racism and misogyny. About the Author

Donna Freitas is a Nonresident Research Associate at the University of Notre Dame's Center for the Study of Religion and Society, and when she is not traveling for research she teaches in the Honors Colleges at Hofstra University. She is the author of Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance and Religion on America's College Campuses (Oxford University Press, 2008), as well as several novels for young adults. A regular contributor to Publishers Weekly, she has also written for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

The Happiness Effect (Feb

In the three-year process of researching and writing my book on digital media (12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You [April 2017]) I read over 1,100 articles and somewhere around 50 books on smartphones, digital technology, and social media. The Happiness Effect (Feb. 2017 release date) was the last book I read, and it easily finishes in the top three of what I think are most helpful books in the field. It is a rare must-read in a crowding shelf of digital tech diagnostic studies.

Donna Freitas surveyed about 800 students, and met and interviewed about 200 students in person, a group spread out across the country, and she compiled it all into this well-researched and brilliantly organized collection of insightful interviews on the social media habits of college students. She reinforces some of the major concerns, brushes aside a number of false presumptions and over simplifications, raises new issues I found nowhere else (like the link between digital addictions and personal insecurity), and she illustrates all of the points from her lively anecdotal interviews.

As a Christian reader, this book is not necessarily Christian, though there are several key interviews with professing Christian college students. The overall strength of the work serves as the most thorough, balanced, illustrative, and shrewd diagnostic tool into the social media habits of college students. And who better to pull off such a thing than Freitas?

In the end, this is a brilliant work of data collection and synthesis for any student, leader, or parent wanting to awaken to the new trends and pressures and expectations in smartphone habits, but with critical thinking and with an awareness of the complex social dimensions navigated by this smartphone generation. It is highly recommended as a diagnostic study that exposes the strengths and weakness of the digital age, and begs for solid gospel solutions going forward.

Here’s one little taste from the book, on the constant love/hate schizophrenic relationship we have with our phones. Freitas writes this on page 230:

“The burden we are carrying around because of our phones would be lifted if they would only disappear off the face of this earth. These tiny, light, pretty, shiny devices have come to represent an outsized weight upon our shoulders — we look at them and see our to-do lists, our responsibilities, other people’s needs, our perpetual inability to keep up, the ways in which others constantly judge us, everyone’s successes amid all our failures, among so many other stresses — stresses that feel more like thousands of pounds than a few ounces. At the same time, we see them as our escape from boredom and loneliness, our connection to loved ones and friends, our guide when we are lost, the archive of our best hair days and most memorable moments, the diaries where we place all our most intimate feelings, hopes, and dreams.”

To make it all seem simpler would be a disservice to this generation.

I learned from this book!

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Yik Yak, and ChatRoulette… (The last two I have never heard of until this book)…. There are so many social media tools out there and it can be overwhelming. And it is overwhelming for Millennials and younger.

Donna Freitas interviews various college students all over the country to get their opinions on social media. Reading what they thought in their own words was something! I learned so much while reading The Happiness Effect: How Social Media Is Driving a Generation to Appear Perfect at Any Cost. I realized how much I didn’t know was out there. That was a wake up call for me. I told my husband if we have children one day that he will have to stay up to date on all the social media tools that are out there. (He knew about the social media tools that I did not know about. He is much more familiar with all of that than I).

I found it hard to comprehend how much Millennials think about social media: What to post, who can see what they post (They make groups so they can decide what that group will or won’t see!), how many friends do I have and does so and so have more?. The number of friends is apparently very important too. And most importantly: Never post anything that could be considered bad or negative; that looks bad on your “online image”. You MUST appear happy. That was hard to believe how they feel everything has to be happy even if you aren’t. It was hard to comprehend what how much some think before they post. “If it won’t get a like then I won’t post it!”, Or if they post it and don’t get likes, they remove it! Some spend hours thinking about what they will post!! And they won’t post controversial as they could be looked upon as negative and they can’t have that.

I also found it interesting that college students in fraternities/sororites are monitored and if a post is/ or appears possibly negative for that fraternity/sorority, they will be forced to remove it.

Even before they are in college they think about what they post in case a college admissions person looks at their social media, which could affect their future enrollment. And college students are careful to what they post so they aren’t affected by future employment. (I do this myself- I also do not list where I work on my social media).

Also interesting was how often Millennials think about getting rid of social media- for a short amount of time or longer. Some can’t even put their phones down for two minutes, they have to constantly check their social media for that ever important post. It was interesting to learn how they feel that they must be available 24-7.

Granted, not every Millennial is like this. There are some Millennials that do not use social media at all. They are the minority.

As I read this book, it got me thinking about how I use social media, specifically Facebook. I hope to not use it as much in the future.

This was a good read and again, I learned so much. I recommend everyone to read The Happiness Effect: How Social Media Is Driving a Generation to Appear Perfect at Any Cost. It could be an eye opening read.

About the Author
Greg Richards lectures in leisure studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is co-ordinator of the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) and has led a number of EU projects in the fields of tourism education, cultural tourism, sustainable tourism, tourism employment, conference tourism and ICT in tourism. His main research interest is cultural tourism.

Anne-Mette Hjalager is an independent consultant and contract researcher based in the Science Park in Aarhus, Denmark. Over the past ten years she worked intensively with and for the tourism industry, and she has keenly pursued labour market and innovation issues. A Joy to Read!

It is impossible to imagine a better celebration of my favourite novel than this fabulous new book. Having read Susannah Fullerton's ground-breaking 'Jane Austen and Crime', I approached this book with high expectations - they were exceeded. The book tells the fascinating story of how 'Pride and Prejudice' came to be published, the initial reactions to the novel and how from the very beginning it gained fervent admirers, and then it shows the incredible growth in popularity over the decades.
There is an intriguing chapter on the translations of the novel. I had no idea that a French translation appeared the very year in which the novel was first published, though it does sound as if it did no justice to the book whatsoever! I especially enjoyed the chapter on the first sentence. I knew it was famous, but had little understanding of why it has become so famous and what richness there is in just that one sentence. The chapter on sequels and prequels was eye-opening - I knew there were lots of them out there, but had no conception of just what lengths they go to and how weird and wonderful some of them are. And then there was the most interesting chapter about all the merchandise - 'Pride and Prejudice' quotes on skateboards, or nappies, T-shirts and china. I boggled over all the stuff that quotes or imitates 'Pride and Prejudice' in some way.
'Celebrating Pride and Prejudice' has some fantastic illustrations too, so is a joy to look at as well as to read. I had never seen the illustrations by Robert Ball or Phillip Gough before, and loved seeing the Dutch Mr Darcy and pictures from lesser known film versions.
My only complaint about this book was that it came to an end. If I could give it 10 stars out of 5 I would do so. Jane Austen would have been delighted to think her "darling child" was being celebrated in such a beautifully written, comprehensive, entertaining and thought-provoking book.

Besides being trotted out for the opening of every news article containing anything vaguely related to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, its author, its characters, its plot or any other self-serving cause, I have seen this famous first line from the novel on T shirts, mugs, book bags and stationary. It is indeed a truth universally acknowledged that PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a phenomenon!

Exalted by scholars and embraced by the masses, it is indeed a literary treasure for the everyman. In this year of its 200th birthday, the outpouring of celebration in the press, online and in print confirms our longstanding love affair and addiction. We just can't get enough of it.

Just in time for the year-long festivities is CELEBRATING PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: 200 YEARS OF JANE AUSTEN'S MASTERPIECE, an in-depth exploration of Jane Austen's classic novel by Susannah Fullerton. At 240 pages, it is packed full of text and many full-color illustrations--something for everyone from the novice reader to veteran Janeite. The volume covers a range of topics as the chapters are broken down by categories such as the writing of, the reactions to, the style of, the heroine, the hero, illustrations, sequels and adaptations, theatrical versions, and, of course a whole chapter devoted to the famous opening line quoted above.

My "first impressions" of this tribute to one of my favorite novels was the stunning cover resplendent with the plume of a peacock (the iconic symbol or pride) and appropriately in peacock blue! They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but I do. If a publisher does not care enough about that "first impression" then why should I buy their book? Flipping through the pages the overall design is polished and each of the illustration is credited. Huzzah! And boy do the illustrations pop. Each page has something iconic or new, even to this die-hard Austen book collector who owns numerous illustrated editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE dating back to the 1890's!

Fullerton discusses every aspect of this novel imaginable, but one subject is of particular interest to me: Sequels and Adaptations. Are you surprised dear reader? Yes, I have read a few Austen-inspired novels in my day and can appreciate Fullerton's keen eye for the sublime and the ridiculous and the "uses and abuses" by many. She does however look at the phenomena of the Austen spinoff with her tongue firmly set in her cheek; occasionally taking a painful stab.

"There is only one PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and for many readers, that is simply not enough. They want more! And if Jane Austen could imagine lives for her characters after the ending of her novel - a clergyman husband for Kitty and one of Uncle Philip's clerks for Mary - why should not other authors do the same?" p. 155

Many could argue the point, and do, but Fullerton is celebrating PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and its impact on readers and culture, warts and all. She goes on to enlighten us on the differences between mixed sequels such as OLD FRIENDS AND NEW FANCIES, by Sybil Briton (misspelled Brunton), continuations like A MATCH FOR MARY BENNET, by Eucharista Ward, "Jane Austen would surely have been the first to scoff at such Evangelical claptrap," (ouch) and retellings and their variation the "what if" like FITZWILLIAM DARCY AN HONOURABLE MAN, by Brenda Webb. However, we were not amused when her historical outline turned into finger pointing and our eyebrows often reached our hairline over such statements as...

"Abigail Reynolds has written "A PEMBERLEY MEDLEY of five variations of Darcy's story, and Mary Simonsen has had at least three goes at making Darcy do what she wants him to do. Perhaps readers should pause over MR. DARCY TAKES THE PLUNGE to ask what depths this hero must be further expected to plumb?" p. 160

The chapter continues with explorations of Austen-inspired mysteries, paranormal, children's adaptation, chick lit and regencies, and pornographic novels. Fullerton states that no other novel has inspired so many prequels, sequels etc. than PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. She bluntly asks if these other books are vital to the enjoyment of the original or "simply derivative rubbish we can all live without?" and then softens her blow in the last line of the chapter, "For with PRIDE AND PREJUDICE it has turned out that "The End" was really just the beginning." p. 173

Fullerton has supplied her view of a great novel and given us a volume to treasure and debate. I greatly enjoyed the details and images, and most of the observations in this tribute, yet I have come away feeling my heart divided between admiration and resentment for the author. Could it be that our "personal" PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and its characters are so deeply entrenched in the hearts of many, and interpreted so differently by most, that others will be at odds with her choices too? Am I pulling a Lizzy Bennet and "not making allowance enough for difference of situation and temper"? Quite possibly, but I will not let it ruin my happiness. CELEBRATING PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a must read this year, if only to rejoice in our differences of opinion and laugh in our turn.

Painful

Since I enjoy most anything having to do with Jane Austen, I had high hopes for this book. However, I winced from cover to cover over Fullerton's use of superlatives, blatant opinions stated as fact (several of which I heartily disagreed with), and the shallowness with which she dealt with her wide scope of topics. This book would be okay if you are looking for a quick jaunt through the world of Austen, but if you are an Austen fan looking for in-depth analysis and information, you would be well served to look somewhere else.
