A comprehensive approach to the air vehicle design process using the principles of systems engineering

Due to the high cost and the risks associated with development, complex aircraft systems have become a prime candidate for the adoption of systems engineering methodologies. This book presents the entire process of aircraft design based on a systems engineering approach from conceptual design phase, through to preliminary design phase and to detail design phase.

Presenting in one volume the methodologies behind aircraft design, this book covers the components and the issues affected by design procedures. The basic topics that are essential to the process, such as aerodynamics, flight stability and control,aero-structure, and aircraft performance are reviewed in various chapters where required. Based on these fundamentals and design requirements, the author explains the design process in a holistic manner to emphasise the integration of the individual components into the overall design. Throughout the book the various design options are considered and weighed against each other, to give readers a practical understanding of the process overall.

Readers with knowledge of the fundamental concepts of aerodynamics, propulsion, aero-structure, and flight dynamics will find this book ideal to progress towards the next stage in their understanding of the topic. Furthermore, the broad variety of design techniques covered ensures that readers have the freedom and flexibility to satisfy the design requirements when approaching real-world projects.

I have advised my students to avoid this text.
By S. C. McParlin
On marking student submissions on aircraft design projects last year, I came across a small number of peculiar anomalies, derived from references to an earlier text by this author. When I subsequently saw some more of the authors' work recently, I was horrified by how many factual inaccuracies even a small sample contained. I could not advise anyone to spend money on this book.

Tocqueville between Two Worlds: The Making of a Political and Theoretical Life, by Sheldon S. Wolin

Alexis de Tocqueville may be the most influential political thinker in American history. He also led an unusually active and ambitious career in French politics. In this magisterial book, one of America's most important contemporary theorists draws on decades of research and thought to present the first work that fully connects Tocqueville's political and theoretical lives. In doing so, Sheldon Wolin presents sweeping new interpretations of Tocqueville's major works and of his place in intellectual history. As he traces the origins and impact of Tocqueville's ideas, Wolin also offers a profound commentary on the general trajectory of Western political life over the past two hundred years.

Wolin proceeds by examining Tocqueville's key writings in light of his experiences in the troubled world of French politics. He portrays Democracy in America, for example, as a theory of discovery that emerged from Tocqueville's contrasting experiences of America and of France's constitutional monarchy. He shows us how Tocqueville used Recollections to reexamine his political commitments in light of the revolutions of 1848 and the threat of socialism. He portrays The Old Regime and the French Revolution as a work of theoretical history designed to throw light on the Bonapartist despotism he saw around him. Throughout, Wolin highlights the tensions between Tocqueville's ideas and his activities as a politician, arguing that--despite his limited political success--Tocqueville was ''perhaps the last influential theorist who can be said to have truly cared about political life.''

In the course of the book, Wolin also shows that Tocqueville struggled with many of the forces that constrain politics today, including the relentless advance of capitalism, of science and technology, and of state bureaucracy. He concludes that Tocqueville's insights and anxieties about the impotence of politics in a ''postaristocratic'' era speak directly to the challenges of our own ''postdemocratic'' age. A monumental new study of Tocqueville, this is also a rich and provocative work about the past, the present, and the future of democratic life in America and abroad.

From Library Journal
Best known for his groundbreaking study Politics and Vision (1960), Wolin has been an influential political philosopher for over 40 years. In this massive masterwork, he examines the "theoretical journey" of Alexis de Tocqueville, author of the indispensable Democracy in America (1835-39). For Wolin, the importance of Tocqueville's classic work is that it marked the first time democracy was the central focus of a political theory, and it also served as an early link between liberalism and democracy. Wolin concentrates on Tocqueville's active political life, including his experiences with the conflicting political movements in Europe and his efforts to import the vibrant nature of American politics to France. He also analyzes the political meaning of Tocqueville's lesser-known writings, Souveniers (1893) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). He is well steeped in the history of political theory, and the book is generously documented with over 60 pages of notes. By writing this biography of "political and theoretical choices made over time," Wolin has effectively written the history of modern political theory. Like Democracy in America, this is a work that will endure and be studied by future generations of scholars. Highly recommended for academic libraries. Thomas A. Karel, Franklin & Marshall Coll. Review
Honorable Mention for the 2001 Award for Best Professional/Scholarly Book in Government and Science, Association of American Publishers

Winner of the David Easton Award

"Wolin offers a Tocqueville who is extraordinarily complex, deeply conflicted and by no means the uncritical booster of democratic possibility he is sometimes made out to be. . . . Tocqueville Between Two Worlds is as much an intellectual biography as it is a work of more abstract political thought. In Wolin's hands an appreciation of the power of Tocqueville's contributions to Western political thought is enhanced by pegging his work to his often fretful life story."--Jean Bethke Elshtain, Washington Post Book World

"[Wolin seeks to] demonstrate that what [Tocqueville] produced was a 'coherent theoretical and political project'--and one still relevant not just to American political debate, but to our understanding of democratic systems on both sides of the Atlantic.... Wolin here develops [this view] with enormous intellectual energy and flair through several hundred pages of a book which is clearly intended to be definitive."--Biancamaria Fontana, The Times Literary Supplement

"Sheldon Wolin's magisterial study of Tocqueville is the culmination of a remarkable body of work on the history of political thought, the harvest of four decades of engaged reflection.... An arresting critique of Tocqueville's theoretical trajectory, illuminated against the backdrop of his public career."--Gopal Balakrishnan, The New Left Review

"The strength of Mr. Wolin's monograph lies in his patient, close readings of Tocqueville's major woks. . . . Wolin sets Tocqueville in a wider intellectual context by relating his thought to the philosophy of Hobbes, Locke, Marx, Nieztsche, among others. . . . He is especially concerned to argue . . . that the participatory democracy Tocqueville celebrated has become, in our postmodern times, economic despotism, or that it threatens to do so."--Thomas Pavel, Wall Street Journal

"Wolin wants to make Tocqueville into a serious postmodern thinker. For Wolin, Tocqueville puts his finger on the central conflict in American life, which is between the forms of democracy and real politics."--Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker

"In striving to give us Tocqueville whole, and in doing so more than any one writer in English, Mr. Wolin puts us so far in his debt that any criticism seems . . . small souled."--Will Morrisey, The Washington Times

"[An] ambitious and very comprehensive study. . . . This book is an unusually penetrating and stimulating guide to Tocqueville the man and theorist as well as to modern political thought generally as it might be seen if considered from a Tocquevillian point of view. It is a major contribution."--Choice

"Wolin here develops [Toqueville's philosophy] with enormous intellectual energy and flair through several hundred pages of a book which is clearly intended to be definitive."--Biancamaria Fontana, Times Literary Supplement

"A masterful exploration of Alexis de Tocqueville's entire oeuvre . . . Whether the vestiges of the old world could be used to moderate the fearsome potential of the new one was the problem of Tocqueville's life. Wolin helps us understand this problem and those worlds with the sophistication and subtlety of a scholar steeped in the canon of western political thought."--Johnathan O'Neill, The Times Higher Education Supplement

"Tocqueville Between Two Worlds . . . is always interesting and sometimes fascinating."--Alan Ryan, The New York Review of Books

"Sheldon Wolin here revisits the major themes of his influential writing. . . . The premise of this ambitious book is that one can gain a deeper sense of the challenges facing both modern and 'postmodern' politics by following Tocqueville's simultaneous attempts to create a political life and to reinvent political theory by straddling the various dichotomous worlds of Wolin's title."--Cheryl B. Welch, Political Studies

"One of the most interesting books in political theory published in the last few years. . . . Wolin's theoretical ambition mirrors Tocqueville's own goal of creating a new political science for a new epoch. . . . Like Tocqueville, he has the ambition to educate democratic regime in a society of individuals whose most powerful desire is to get rich and who are ready to abandon public affairs."--Aurelian Craiutu, Review of Politic

"Sheldon S. Wolin demonstrates how Toqueville's classic Democracy in America is also a study of aristocracy in America--a subsidiary but fascinating theme that here receives, for the first time, the loving attention it deserves."--Peregrine Worsthorne, New Statesman

"An important and provocative masterwork, one that deserves to achieve enduring status in the years ahead."--Aristide Tessitore, Journal of Politics

From the Inside Flap
"Sheldon Wolin's Tocqueville between Two Worlds conveys a sweep of historical analysis that gives us deep insight not only into Tocqueville himself but also into the American character. The result is a work of supreme scholarship that sheds light on America's present and possible future as well as its past." (-Senator Bill Bradley)

"In his new interpretation of Tocqueville, Sheldon Wolin speaks with a master's voice. For him, Tocqueville's theme is the revival of the political within democracy and against the tendencies of democracy. There is no grander topic for us today, and Wolin's treatment is penetrating, thorough, and authoritative. This is a major work of political theory." (Harvey Mansfield, Harvard University)

"Sheldon Wolin is perhaps the most compelling American political theorist writing in the last half of the twentieth century. Here is a new book to launch the twenty-first, one that shows us how pertinent Tocqueville remains for democrats today and why Wolin continues to inspire so many political theorists." (William E. Connolly, author of Why I Am Not a Secularist)

"Sheldon Wolin has given us a study of Tocqueville worthy of its subject, the greatest interpreter of American democracy. More than a masterful account of Tocqueville's life and thought, Wolin's book is likely to be an enduring work of political theory in its own right. Drawing on Tocqueville's concern with the fate of the political, Wolin offers sobering insights into the democratic prospect in our time." (Michael Sandel, Harvard University, author of Democracy's Discontent)

"This is a magisterial study, a major interpretation of Tocqueville as a political theorist. Wolin has not simply restored Tocqueville to a forgotten place of honor in the canon of political theory. He has created a new place for him, showing how deep and extensive the range of Tocqueville's considerations of democracy have been, paralleling the path of modernity itself." (Thomas Dumm, Amherst College)

The Missing God--Who is Not Missed: Christian Belief in a Secular Society, by Philip Fogarty

More and more people today put their faith only in what they can see, experience for themselves or scientifically prove. Anything else is seen as mere conjecture. Since we cannot see God, or prove God's existence with the tools of science, increasingly people decide that God's existence is but one theory among many, and the question of God becomes irrelevant or even non-existent for many people. There is a slow but inexorable move towards agnosticism. God is missing but not missed. In such a secular culture, many Christians feel the need to ponder again age-old questions about God and about Christian faith, and that is what Philip Fogarty sets out to do in this book. How can we reconcile the existence of God with all the suffering in the world? Is the God of the bible nothing but a vengeful God? Who is Jesus? Was he just a good man or was he truly divine? Did he rise from the dead? What do we mean when we say Jesus is the Saviour of the world and is he the only saviour? Has the church a future? Philip Fogarty is a Jesuit priest based in Dublin.

An invitation to return...
By FrKurt Messick
Near the end of this text, Philip Fogarty SJ asks a question - 'Are priests no more than dinosaurs lumbering their way into extinction in a dying church?' Perhaps it is my imagination, but I have been hearing the correlated reference between religion and dinosaurs, Christianity and dinosaurs, or church and dinosaurs so often lately, that I'm beginning to wonder myself. What is happening in the world today?
There was an intriguing idea floated by a scholar of the Hebrew scriptures, who argued that, as one progressed chronologically through the scriptures, the actual presence of God became less and less; God appeared fewer times, spoke fewer times, even as references to God remained steady, or even increased.
This is not the case today. As Fogarty's title suggests, God seems to be missing. However, the consequent references to God in greater society have not increased to make up for this absence. Is it that we just don't care about God anymore? Is God not so much dead, as irrelevant?
Fogarty explores the attitudes in society today, heavily influenced by science, economics, politics, and psychology. There is a fundamental disconnect between what is being presented in church and what is being presented and held up as valuable and credible in the rest of society.
Even the ideas of miracles, the resurrection, the presence of God in community (at the very least, in the church) seem to have disappeared in modern culture. Even the 'old standby' ideas and preach-able topics of the church are gone. 'What ever happened to hell?' Fogarty asks, with some seriousness, as an example of how the church has re-categorised old ideas, in an attempt to make them more relevant without losing the power or meaning, but somehow missing the mark.
From the earliest time of religion, God existed in community - in fact, one of the intentions of creation, many theologians postulate, is that God desired and desires to be in community with other beings. Fogarty challenges the readers in his final section to look for and develop community, to develop communion with each other. This is not just a task for the laity, the people in the pews, but also for the people in the pulpits and at the altar. Are priests and pastors ready to preach the gospel, and live the gospel, that of love?
Fogarty uses the example of Jesus, saying that Jesus never tried to convert anyone, while recognising the faith that was present in them. This can serve as a model of interfaith and ecumenical dialogue. Fogarty also uses Rahner as a support for developing the idea of priesthood into that of being a community builder, and not simply an administrator of sacraments.
Overall, this book is an intriguing and inspiring look at the church inside and outside. Well-written and engaging, the book has a flow of spirit that invites the reader to address the questions beyond the words of the text. 'Who do you say I am?' Jesus asked. This question is still relevant today, as Fogarty commends to the readers the charge of building communities in which the Kingdom of God can become present.

...Still the best after all these years!
By Perpetual Student
I think this is the best book out there, and I probably have them all. What worked for me was to take the 4 Seasons with me when I went shopping. Eventually I was able to train my eye to know what Season I was looking at, regardless of the lighting in the stores. The day I went shopping, looking for a Winter turquoise top, showed me it's value. From the middle of the store, I looked at the women's department, and said, Ahh, they're all Autumn turquoises. Phooey. I never even left the main aisle . It was kind of a disappointment. There was no reason to even browse.
I also use this information for interiors. A relative was redoing her home and debating between gray and beige for the living room. She had been told that gray was "in", but she was hesitating. I asked her, do you look good in gray? She said, '"no". Well then, don't use it. You don't want to walk out to greet your guests in an outfit that looks good on you, and sit down in a room in another Season that fights with you and what you are wearing. They need to go together. You want to look good in your own home. (Granted, if you have family, it may not be that simple.)

Fun and Helpful Book
By Chris
I read this book when it was new and all the rage, in the early '80s, and I really enjoyed it. Back then for whatever reason I never could figure out for sure what my season was, though. I thought of the book recently and looked to see if it was still available. I was so happy to see that it was being sold on Amazon. I ordered it and read it through almost nonstop! It's a fun and easy read. I don't have any doubt now that I'm an autumn! About 2/3 of my clothes are the wrong color. I have separated them out from the right colors and gotten rid of some. I am on a mission to replace the wrong with the right until I am completely "autumnized." I have clothes shopped once recently and I couldn't believe how easy it was! Once you know your colors you can eliminate what doesn't look best on you and hone in on the right colors. And even better than that, nearly everything you have will coordinate! When I look at the grouping of right colors in my closet, it looks so harmonious, and I truly look and feel better wearing my colors. I highly recommend this book! P.S. If you're worried about the book being dated, it's not. Knowing how to dress yourself properly never goes out of style!

Color can take the lines out of your face!
By MsDeeDee
I think I first bought this book back in the 70's and then again in 2000 something (LOL) At first glance I was intrigued by authors scientific approach to using color to bring out ones natural coloring and beauty. The use of color to bring out our innate personality. Color using a set of colors that would work consistently in beatifying me thrilled me to no end. I had noticed that there were certain colors that seemed to always get me compliments. The fact that the compliments were given on two levels and that Color Me Beautiful book would help me identify the compliment that was solely because the color made me look lovely as opposed to someone just liking a color I happen to be wearing. Even if a color looks great in the department store, it is still a good idea to check the color in the sunlight if you can. Looking always for a color that reflects your face in a better light, does not turn you green or gray or bring out the lines in your face if you are a mature woman like myself.

Religions of the Hellenistic-Roman Age, by Antonia Tripolitis

Religions of the Hellenistic-Roman Age is a superb introduction to the principal Western religions and their philosophical counterparts from the beginnings of Alexander the Great's empire in 331 B.C.E. to the emergence of the Christian world in the fourth century C. E. Anton?a Tripolitis, a noted scholar of Late Antiquity, examines the rise of the Hellenistic-Roman world and presents a comprehensive overview of its beliefs and practices, their socio-psychological and historical development, and the reasons for their success or failure. Her work explores Mithraism, Hellenistic Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, and the philosophies of Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Middle Platonism. It also includes a review of the principal mystery cults, Demeter in Eleusis, Dionysus, Isis, and Cybele or Magna Mater.

Based on the most reliable and up-to-date research on the ancient world, this volume is valuable both as a general guide to ancient Western religion and as essential background reading for the study of early Christianity.

Review
Ronald F. Hock
"An excellent volume. The scope is comprehensive, the treatment is detailed and clear, and the individual sections are succinct, incisive, and authoritative. It is especially welcome to have informed introductions to such diverse phenomena as the Greek mystery cults and philosophical schools, the Jewish synagogue and Jewish wisdom and apocalyptic thought, and the origins, theological development, and eventual success of Christianity all treated clearly, fully, and comprehensively in one book — making it ideal for students studying early Christianity or Late Antiquity in general. As a parachutist's view of the religious landscape of antiquity, this book is able to include all the major religious traditions and see the converging and diverging patterns in the ways they responded to the new world established by Alexander the Great. Highly recommended. "

Expository Times
"If someone is looking for one book which will tell them something about the mystery religions, Stoicism, Middle Platonism, Mithraism, Diaspora Judaism, early Christianity and Gnosticism, then this book does just that. Its strength is in its sweep and its readability."

Bryn Mawr Classical Review
"A useful survey introduction to the religions of classical antiquity. The author's clarity of expression is evident on every page, as she presents the data about classical religions in a lucid, succinct and accessible manner. The book would serve very well as an undergraduate textbook. "

Old Testament Essays
"A splendid introduction for undergraduate students to the world of Hellenistic-Roman thought and religion."

adding only
By Alvaro Lewis
I would like to add to the two reviews written earlier, only that this work makes available for introductory students an intelligent skimming of the surface of religions of the Hellenistic-Roman period. This period description is crucial as it refers not exclusively to the traditional span of the Hellenistic Age from 323 B.C.E. to 31 B.C.E., but from the death of Alexander the Great to the fourth century of the common era. This recalibration nearly doubles the space under review and as a result allows or requires that most of the book addresses the early Jewish diaspora and the early Christian religion.
The author handles each religion or way of life relatively well, clarifying with polish and style the major characteristics, rituals and contexts of the belief systems. New ideas are not the order of business here, instead this concise summary fills a need.
Approximately thirty pages cover all of the "mystery cults" (Isis, Magna Mater, Dionysus, Demeter), with a separate chapter given to Mithraism. What I mean to suggest is that the gross majority of the work summarizes the information available about the beginnings of religions that remain, however changed, not those earlier religions of the Mediterranean that have disappeared. For me the lack of attention to the religions of the Greek and Roman landscapes proved a disappointment, but the book is of exemplary quality as it is for what it is.
A final note: the maps are truly outstanding.

Breezy overview of a spiritually volatile era
By Charles S. Houser
The text of this very readable, no-nonsense, high-level view of all the key philosophies and religions that competed with Judaism and Christianity at the beginning of the Common Era runs to a mere 149 pages. I liked that Tripolitis reduced matters to the mere essentials. I've struggled with the articles in the Anchor Bible Dictionary on many of these religions and have found them difficult to follow and perplexing...and they never seem to give one a sense of how dominant any of them were during their time. Tripolitis provides ample footnotes and a bibliography for the skeptics who want to challenge her generalizations (of which there are many) if they find them too sweeping. One I might want to follow up on myself is her statement that the concept of the individual began in the era she covers (roughly from 331 B.C.E. to the 4th century C.E.). She attributes the success of mystery religions and religions promising personal salvation to this rise of individualism.
Tripolitis covers the great mystery cults (Demeter, Dionysus, Isis, and Cybele), religious philosophies (Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Middle Platonism), Mithraism, Hellenistic Judaism, Christianity, and Gnosticism (both the Christian and non-Christian forms). I appreciated that Tripolitis acknowledges when information is lacking (as with the mystery cults) and that she resists the temptation to fill in the gaps with speculative psychology. Similarly, she is careful not to try to identify clear relationships between the many different Gnostic sects that emerged in the 2nd century C.E. The ultimate and lasting success of Christianity she attributes to more than just Constantine's favor. It succeeded, she asserts, because of its universalism, ecclesiastical organization, standardized canon of Scripture, and credal formulas. In sum, this is a handy book that you'll want to keep near by as you wrestle with weightier and more opinionated tomes.

Great way to put early Christianity into perspective
By calmly
An excellent introduction, concise but with lots of details.

Enough about key mystery cults (of Demeter, Dionysius, Isis, Cybele, and especially Mithra), religious philosophies (Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Middle Platonism) and Hellenic Platonism to put early Christianity into good perspective.

The 7-page summary reinforces the full (but itself only 142 page) presentation. If Tripolitis did not know this subject so well, I see no way she could have written such a fine summary (nor the entire book).

A 9-page bibliography, organized to follow the book's chapters, may help you to follow up if you want to plunge down into any topic that book has introduced.

Sultry Climates, by Ian Littlewood

The sexual motives of travel are rarely spelled out. Travel books, social histories, guides and brochures favour a more wholesome image of tourist pursuits. But in the shadows there is an alternative history of tourism made up of precisely the details that usually go unmentioned. It is this history that Sultry Climates sets out to explore.

Among the many travellers discussed here are eighteenth-century Grand Tourists, rebels from the Romantic era, Victorian pilgrims to the Mediterranean, American expatriates of the 1920s, early sun-worshippers and post-war package tourists.

What emerges from their stories is a continuing thread of erotic experience, for the most part neglected or ignored by cultural historians, that has been central to the meaning of travel for women as well as men, gay people as well as straight.

‘Ian Littlewood has long since proved himself a discerning, perceptive and wonderfully well-read guide to intellectual and cultural landscapes… There are many good things in this very good book.’ - The Independent

‘Ian Littlewood’s book… is deliciously racy, provocative and quick-witted, stuffed with louche anecdotes and exotic quotes.’ - The Sunday Times

‘A marvellously taut book… Littlewood groups his characters carefully… and pays scrupulous attention to the changing historical context.’ - The Daily Telegraph

Amazon.com Review
Travel can mean travail, risk, even danger. Given all that, why have so many people over the course of history taken the trouble to take themselves out of their familiar surroundings and wander off to distant, unfamiliar places?

Well, the rewards for the adventurous traveler are many, writes literary historian Ian Littlewood, among them the promise of self-discovery, of education, of broadening one's horizons. But, more elementally, there's another lure: the prospect of landing in a strange new bed with an exotic partner somewhere far from home. "Travel," Littlewood neatly observes, "tends to undermine moral absolutes." And so many travelers have found out for themselves: Oliver Goldsmith, for instance, who concluded of Italy, "sensual bliss is all the nation knows"; James Boswell, who filled his diaries of travels to the continent with "sultanesque fantasy" and some sultanesque fact; and Lord Byron, who, "having left England in a blaze of scandal ... took full advantage of the sexual privileges of exile."

Littlewood's learned but engaging study takes a fresh look at the cultural history of journeying from a fly-on-the-bedroom-wall point of view, and fans of literary travel will find much of interest in his pages. --Gregory McNamee

From Library Journal
The author of several travel guides (e.g., A Literary Guide to Venice), Littlewood contends that the allure of travel is rooted in the anticipation of sexual encounter and that sex is the tacit motivation for travel. His reading of the narratives, correspondence, and memoirs of British travelers (beginning with the 18th-century Grand Tour) reveal that ostensibly they journeyed in search of cultural enlightenment, expanded sensibility, and self-knowledge but in effect they set out to escape native inhibitions in the pursuit of erotic opportunity. Boswell sought out the prostitutes of the Continent, Byron ravaged both genders, while Forster, J.A Symonds, A.E. Houseman, and Joe Orton lusted after the lads of Naples, Venice, Alexandria, and Tangier. Littlewood suggests that similar unexpressed desires are exploited in tourism packages promoting the sensual enticements of sun, sand, and abandonment in sultry climes. The information in this book is neither new nor shocking but it is presented in an engaging narrative. Recommended for all libraries. Lonnie Weatherby, McGill Univ. Lib., Montreal

The exotic and the erotic.
By Luc REYNAERT
Why do people travel? For Ian Littlewood, 'the sexual element is vital to tourism' (p.5).
His book offers a keen look at (sex) tourism through the ages (from the 17th century till today).
He uses therefore mostly the diaries of well-known writers or artists like Boswell, Wilde, Gide, Loti, Forster, Byron, Isherwood, Waugh, Gauguin and others.
For those who didn't read these diaries, this book constitutes an excellent documentary base for some aspects (sexual) of the lives of these men.
The author shows clearly that women as well as men escaped through travel from their unhappy (matrimonial) or dangerous (homosexuality) home situation, and also that their main goal was 'sex with the young', and sometimes 'with the very young' (paedophilia).
I recommend this book because it treats a modern subject, without dodging an often disguised but essential part of it.

Why do people travel? For Ian Littlewood, 'the sexual element is vital to tourism' (p.5).
His book is mostly based on the diaries of writers and artists like Boswell, Wilde, Gide, Loti, Forster, Byron, Isherwood, Waugh, Gauguin, with at the end a comment on the Club Med.
It constitutes a keen look at (sex) tourism through the ages.
Since travel began (the British coming over to the continent), the sexual component was an implicit part of the story. The official reason was culture (opening of the mind), but the unofficial one was sexual 'education'. The home comers couldn't disguise it, for they were infected by VD's.
Travel reflected and still reflects economic power and 'colonialist' superiority.
For the affluent who could afford it, Italy (and also Africa) was the main pleasure ground for women travellers; Paris and the Mediterranean countries (Algeria) for men. Their main goal was 'sex with the young', also the very young (paedophilia).
Travel was and is an escape. Now, an escape out of stress. In the former centuries an escape out of the home situation: for women, the subordination; for men, lack of sexual liberty and condemnation of homosexuality.
I recommend this book because it treats a modern subject without dodging an often disguised but essential part of it.

Exotic Travel Takes On a Whole New Meaning !!
By William Gary Smith
Terrific account of the true motives behind various centuries of travel from the UK to Europe, to Tahiti, and to other exotic locations around the world - the drive for sex in all its varieties is a primary driver for most of the writers, and others who chronicled their travels. This book contains a huge bibliography !! Highly recommended......

The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality: Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality, by Tracy Ore

This anthology examines the social construction of race, class, gender, and sexuality and the institutional bases for these relations. While other texts discuss various forms of stratification and the impact of these on members of marginalized groups, Ore provides a thorough discussion of how such systems of stratification are formed and perpetuated and how forms of stratification are interconnected. Critical thinking questions at the end of each reading and part opening essays aid students in understanding how the material relates to their lives and how their own attitudes, actions, and perspectives may serve to perpetuate a stratified system. 13 new readings have been added focusing on the experiences of immigrants, contemporary issues in social institutions, current examples of how the media portrays events and much more.

Let's just move society backwards!?
By Douglas Albrecht
OK - so, I didn't read the whole book.
In general, it seemed like the message delivered was more of a divider than a uniter. While many would say would say we should be striving for equality, this book seemed to provide a view of making it a point of our differences and delivered no message of hope. Beleive it or not, not everyone is a victim.

Maybe I missed something.

Pretty Bad
By Jason
Was a required reading, hence I rented it. This book is pretty horrendous. The quality of the writings are terrible, not something I would consider Master's level reading, yet I had to read it in a Master's level program. Atrocious is also a word that comes to mind when remembering the readings I had to do. Would Not recommend to buy, perhaps you can 'borrow' a friends copy for your semester and save the dollars on the rental. This book is not even worth a rental. No new knowledge is gained from reading this book.
