About the Author
Eric H. Roth teaches international graduate students the pleasures and perils of academic writing and public speaking in English at the University of Southern California (USC), and holds the title of “Master Lectuerer”. He also consults English language schools on communicative methods to effectively teach English. Roth co-authored Compelling Conversations: Questions and Quotations on Timeless Topics in 2006 to help English language learners increase their English fluency. Recommended by English Teaching Professional magazine, the advanced ESL textbook has been used in over 50 countries in English classrooms and conversation clubs. Easy English Times, an adult literacy newspaper, has published a monthly column, "Instant Conversation Activities," based on the book since 2008. The first specific version for a particular country, Vietnam, was published in 2011. Compelling American Conversations: Questions and Quotations for American English Language Learners , designed to help American immigrants develop both academic vocabulary and strengthen speaking skills in English, came out in 2012. A member of the USC faculty since 2003, Roth is a member of numerous professional organizations including: California Association of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL); the International Communication Association (ICA); the International Professors Project (IPP); and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Roth has given several CATESOL and TESOL conference presentations and led many English teacher training workshops. Mark Treston has over fifteen years of teaching and management experience, and specializes in world history and teaching English. Mark taught high school and college students in Korea, Israel, Japan, and the U.S. Mark also co-founded two colleges and consulted many other educational institutions on creating learner-centered classes. A book about a boy, but is it a boy's book?

We just added "Westward to Home" and several other "My America" books to our elementary school library, so it remains to be seen how popular this particular title will be.
Author Patricia Hermes does a fine job of telling the story of a nine-year old boy, through brief journal entries, about life on the Oregon Trail in 1848. While we get a kid's eye view of the hardships, the people, and some of the typical events associated with traveling west by covered wagon, I'm not convinced that this is a genuinely BOY'S book.
I have traveled along the Oregon Trail, from Independence, MO, to Walla Walla, WA, and I was once a boy. That makes me no expert, but I think a nine-year old kid on the Oregon Trail would be less interested in the interpersonal difficulties of the adults in the wagon train, and more fascinated with guns, never-before-seen animals such as pronghorns, prairie dogs, snakes, lizards, and buffalo, and some of the amazing landforms that come into view after a monotonous trek across the flat prairies.
There was a brief mention of Chimney Rock, which would be awe inspiring for any kid to see and muse about. And what about Register Rock where a kid would surely stop to scratch in his own name and read the signatures of those who had gone on before? One would think a boy would be more amazed at his first views of the Rockies. And even when Joshua is curious about the Indians he sees in the forts along the way, I'd expect him to be more fascinated with the way they looked and talked, what they wore, how they smelled and how they did things like eat and smoke. This could also be said for the soldiers and trappers he must've seen at these forts.
I also can't imagine a nine-year old boy spending so much time in his journal worrying about a girl who was "sweet" on him. Instead, I would like to have seen his male friendships developed a bit more fully.
Having said all this, I still think this book is a welcome addition to middle grade titles about the Oregon Trail. The overall picture of the life, people and hardships, including many tragic deaths, is realistic. I anticipate that more girls will be reading this than boys, but it fills a need at this level.

The rehabilitation of Grant's reputation

This is volume one of a series on General Ulysses S Grant. I chronicles his rise from an obscure colonel to the general who turned the tide with his audacious assault on Vicksburg. There are bewildering details on tactics, strategy and battles which I found myself skipping over as beyond my ability to process. What I found fascinating was the man himself revealed to be a ruthless fighter yet a compassionate man who treated his volunteers like partners, not subordinates. The author carefully documented the falsity of charges of drunkedness raised by a hostile press and political enemies. Grant tried valiantly to curb looting and plundering by his soldiers, and even had to deal with his father's attempts to profit from the the speculation in cotton. Initially he refused to address the issue of slavery stating the military had no role in abolition..its mission was to win the war. At first he told runaway slaves they were on their own, and indignant slave owners it was not his job to return slaves. Later it became apparent that abolition and secession were inextricably linked. He made provisions for refugee slaves to build encampments, gave them medical treatment and allowed the officers to hire them to perfom tasks that lightened the burden on the troops. Also fascinating was reading the correspondence between the generals (friend and foe alike).

This is an excellent book written by an eminent Civil War historian and masterful storyteller. The narrative is focused on the period of U. S. Grant's military career from his assuming his initial command of volunteer infantry to the fall of Vicksburg. Along the way the reader sees Grant's career evolution from a barely known unskilled soldier to an ultra pragmatic leader of men and an aggressive victorious military commander. Grant's trials and tribulations are brought to light. Disregarded by his peers, hampered by his lack of political subtly, constrained by his commanding officer, he nevertheless won victory after victory; Belmont, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. These battles are described in crisp prose and just the right amount of detail.

The author relies on military communiques, eyewitness accounts, Grant’s writings, and Mr. Catton's inspired prose to provide the reader with insight, context and perspective.

However, that although the author makes a valiant attempt at presenting a balanced portrait of General Grant, this is definitely a very partisan book. Mr. Catton is VERY clearly a supporter of Grant and that's OK, as long as the reader realizes this fact. In addition, although the book does contain key maps, I thought that they were too detailed and complicated. As a result, they did not help me follow the action, particularly in regard to the Vicksburg campaign. These shortcomings prevented me from assigning a higher rating to this otherwise monumental work, but has not deterred me from eagerly looking forward to reading the next volume.

U.S.Grant myths debunked in a highly personal and readable style

At the request of the widow of Lloyd Lewis, Catton takes on the work Lewis began with "Captain Sam Grant." In this volume, and its sequel, "Grant Takes Command", Catton not only makes the subject matter uniquely his own but, intentionally or not, begins the rehabilitation of Grant's personal and military reputation.
The tone is purely Catton at his best. It is folksy, as though he were telling you about another acquaintance. He related the historical narrative with the story of the real human behind that narrative. Though rigorously researched, documented and footnoted, Catton never resorts to the stilted academic tone too often found in histories and biographies.
I have read numerous works from the Catton canon. This is probably his best.

About the Author
Rod Boyer served on the faculty at Hope College, Holland, MI, where he taught, researched, and wrote biochemistry for 26 years. He earned his B.A. in chemistry and mathematics at Westmar College (Iowa) and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry at Colorado State University. After three years as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow with M. J. Coon (cytochromes P-450) in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School, he joined the chemistry faculty at Hope. There he directed the work of over 75 undergraduate students in research supported by the NIH, NSF, Dreyfus Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Petroleum Research Fund (ACS). With his students, he published numerous journal articles in the areas of ferritin iron storage and biochemical education. He spent a sabbatical year as an American Cancer Society Scholar in the lab of Nobel laureate, Tom Cech at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Rod is also the author of Modern Experimental Biochemistry (Third Edition, 2000, Benjamin-Cummings) and Concepts in Biochemistry (Third Edition, 2006, John Wiley & Sons) and serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education (BAMBED). He is a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and a former member of its Education and Professional Development Committee that recently designed the undergraduate biochemistry degree recommended by the ASBMB. Rod now resides in Bozeman, Montana, where he continues to write and consult in biochemical education.

Biochemistry laboratory

This book is an excellent introduction and guide for both undergraduate biochemistry lab classes (which I teach) and for the research lab. It provides enough background for students to understand how a technique works, and a wealth of technical and practical information. I would recommend this book for undergraduates and new graduate students , and anyone teaching undergraduate or graduate students. My only gripe is that it does not include gas chromatography, but just about every other basic biochemistry laboratory technique is covered.

Very well written

This textbook accompanied my laboratory course very well. Its explanations are concise and easy to follow. I rented mine from Amazon, which lowered the price a lot. There were a lot of marking in it (almost all pencil), which doesn't bother me but may annoy others. I just ignored them.

TED KOPPEL, a 42-year veteran of ABC News, was anchor and managing editor of Nightline from 1980 to 2005. New York University recently named Koppel one of the top 100 American journalists of the past 100 years. Possibly the most important book of the decade

People have been warning of the potential catastrophe awaiting us if the electric grid should fail for a long time, but most of those warnings have fallen on deaf ears or considered the rantings of post-apocalyptic doomsayers. But when Ted Koppel--one of the nation's most trusted journalists--takes up the cause, each and every one of us needs to listen. In a relatively short and readable book, Koppel succinctly and unemotionally makes the case that (a) the electric grid of the U.S. is extremely vulnerable to collapse due to either cyberwarfare, EMP attack, or solar flare; (b) due to a variety of economic and political reasons, we have not implemented necessary steps to protect the grid; and (c) most frighteningly of all, we do not have emergency plans on either the state or federal level to deal with a widespread collapse of the grid.

This is not a trivial threat. Imagine Katrina, only thousands-fold. Koppel notes that the report of the commission tasked with evaluating a potential EMP attack predicted that, in the case of such an attack that would destroy large parts of the grid, only 1 in 10 Americans would still be alive a year later. It is important to stress in light of the preceding sentence that Koppel's book is NOT a hysterical fear-mongering rant; instead, it is a careful analysis of the genuine risks and a convincing documentation of how completely unprepared we are, at all levels, to face this threat. As a chilling example, consider the quote Koppel provides by Jeh Johnson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, who when asked how the country would respond to a collapse of the grid, said "Oh, I'm sure FEMA has the capability to bring in backup transformers." As Koppel so compellingly describes, we not only don't have sufficient spare transformers lying around, we don't even have the infrastructure to deliver them in a timely manner.

Koppel also offers a convincing argument that this threat is different from other seemingly similar threats, such as nuclear war. Simply put, with conventional or nuclear war, we know who is attacking or might attack us, and our ability to quickly administer an equal or greater response serves as a deterrent to any even slightly sane enemy. It is also the case that relatively few nations exist with the capability to mount a conventional or nuclear offense against us. But as Koppel notes, this is the first time in the history of warfare where "small groups, even individuals, can undermine the critical infrastructure of a state."

The book is divided into three major sections: The first, "A Cyberattack" is a careful if sometimes dry and technical argument demonstrating the vulnerability of the grid. My impression is that Koppel started the book this way to show that he isn't merely fear-mongering, but if you find your eyes glazing over the minutiae of the SCADA computer software used by electric companies, don't give up on the book entirely; skip to the second section, "A Nation Unprepared," which documents chillingly the lack of planning for a collapse of the grid by the very federal agencies that OUGHT to be planning for such an event, and the third section, "Surviving the Aftermath," where Koppel describes the mind-set and actions taken by the groups most likely to survive a grid collapse, such as preppers and the Mormons. While that section is perhaps the most "optimistic" part of the book, the optimism dims more than a bit when Koppel repeatedly raises but never satisfactorily answers the question of how these prepared individuals or communities will react when throngs of panicked citizens who HAVEN'T prepared come knocking on their doors and asking for help.

I don't often encounter a book that I think literally everybody in the country should read, including and especially our nation's leaders. We can take steps to protect the grid. It won't be cheap or easy, but it can be done. My hope is that Koppel's book will attract enough attention that we will no longer ignore this very real vulnerability.

Cyber Pearl Harbor

Because he’s Ted Koppel, he gets to interview cabinet secretaries and their senior staff, as well as senior civil servants, politicians and agency heads. To set up interviews across the country, he simply called US Senators. That quality alone makes Lights Out a higher level read. The other plus is the way Koppel has organized and written this book. It is broken out into bite-sized chapters, like television news items, keeping interest but delivering the salient points succinctly. And he leaves no stone unturned. Every time you think “Yes, but…” he has the answer in the next paragraph, page or chapter. So Lights Out is both challenging and satisfying, fascinating and horrifying. And important.

The core of the horror is our electrical grid. It is no secret that it old, old fashioned, creaky, decrepit and vulnerable to physical attack. Koppel adds that in addition, it is even more vulnerable to cyberattack. Hackers could, if they so desired, crash the whole electric grid, much as the United States and Israel ruined Iran’s uranium processing plants and as Iran turned 30,000 Saudi computers into useless doorstops. We have the technology; we have successfully deployed it ourselves. If similar efforts were made against the USA, it would mean weeks and months before power was restored. Water would stop flowing, gas would stop flowing, gas stations would close, hospitals would close, banking systems would cease. Debit and credit cards would not operate. Replacements for Very Large Transformers run to over a year lead time. The US has hundreds, all custom made.

And the government? Clueless. There are no plans to deal with this or prevent it. Cabinet Secretaries contradict agency heads on the existence of plans, administration “experts” minimize the possibilities, first responders hope they can retire before they have to deal with it. That is the state of American preparedness. There is no policy, no oversight, no budget, no contingency, no planning at all. We’ll deal with it when it happens, like global warming. It’s just not real enough for Americans to worry about. The best advice from Washington? Ensure you have a portable radio and fresh batteries.

Koppel is clearly worried about it, and all the really nonpolitical experts are unanimous in saying it’s a matter of when and not if. Without a doubling of America’s capacity to feed and house itself somewhere where there’s electricity, there is no way to see everyone through such a period. And no one is even trying, except for handfuls of survivalists/preppers. They are individually preparing for a Mad Max sort of post-apocalypse era, where bullets matter as much as dried food.

It’s a short, fast read, a slap up the side of the head, and a national scandal. We spend billions on 800 foreign bases and ensuring dangerous liquids like chocolate frosting don’t make it into airplane cabins, but the national electrical grid limps to its almost inevitable fate, unattended.

In response to the age old question "Where were you when the lights went out?"
Same place where I was, in the dark.
This book reflects the authors capability to interview important people. However their responses are fairly uniform across the board.
Yes, there might be a problem and we are doing very little to prepare.

The book is short, I read it on a Sunday afternoon. It seems to have a good list of references but there are not a lot of details in the recommendations. Three chapters and about 27 pages are used to discuss the Mormons, which can be summed up as they are prepared.

Based on a TV interview I expected more details, Such as a ranking of which geographic areas are most in danger. Are here areas of much older facilities likely to be difficult to repair? Actions to take if a problem occurs, rather than just "have a plan". Hard examples of major recent power outages and time it took to recover, instead of just a few examples.

For instance if 1 major transformer is lost do we stay or do we go?

If you know nothing about the grid and the potential for it failing, nothing about cyberwarfare and the possibilities, this might be a good introduction.

It's a very easy read without a ton of details. And it shows what the government is not doing. If you remember the Northeast blackout of 2003 in which a software bug plunged 55 million in to the dark then you know the possibility of computer failure taking down the grid.

Not very enlightening or useful

This may be good for browsing, but not as a reference book. The entries are often too short to be useful, even as introductions. They are arranged by subject, and I often thought that the "ologies" dealt with should have been put under different rubrics than they were. There is an index, but it is not as helpful as one would hope. If one is looking for "postmodernism," one can only find it if one happens to read the paragraph on "post-structuralism." Many pages contain unenlightening drawings: some are supposed to be humorous, but they are not.

About the Author

Johnny Salda�a is Professor Emeritus of Theatre from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts’ School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at Arizona State University. He has been involved in the field of theatre as a teacher educator, director, playwright, and qualitative researcher.�Salda�a’s research methods have been used and cited internationally for studies in K-12 and higher education, the fine arts, business, technology, social sciences, government, social services, communication, human development, sport, health care, and medicine. This is a very general book about how you can think to be a better researcher so that you can do qualitative studies. I highly recommend this to others. I give it 4 stars because some information in it was too general for me. Then again it is not meant to be a specific road-map.

Stay away - there's so much better out there.

This book's approach to qualitative research is mediocre at best. What is far more concerning than Saldana's methodological recommendations, however, is his presentation. Allow me to elaborate.

First of all, Saldana frames qualitative research in an overly cognitivist manner. He constantly resorts to the language of "mental patterns," and "ways your mind works," placing a strong emphasis on the idea that learning qualitative research methods requires you to remake your mental works. Even as he cites numerous incidental sources from neuroscience--few if any of which are germane to the points he is making about qualitative research itself--his choice of words and his glib tone take the book in the direction of the pseudo-science of "life-hacking" more than scholarship. One does not need to know "how your brain works" in order to talk, in order to analyze the world around us, and so on; so the priority given to pop-neuroscience language seems to be a distraction at best, and at worst a smokescreen for thinly-developed material.

That should be enough to steer you away to another introduction to qualitative inquiry. However, there are a number of other incidental issues which also trouble the book. First, in chapter 1 Saldana presents a highly simplified, deterministic view of how a person's social position influences (or, as he seems to suggest, equates to) their worldview. I am fully aware that there is a relationship between one's positionality and one's voice--this was the substance of one of the first major interventions by feminist scholars, such that the idea is often presumed commonsense in the academy today. Unfortunately, the feminist critique of the so-called "master subject" (Haraway's term) is not so well-known that scholars today can simply dash off a terrible representation of it *in a textbook for new academics,* who may not be exposed to any more rigorous formulation in subsequent coursework. Furthermore, Saldana implies that by openly acknowledging one's positionality one can earn the trust of readers, by showing that the researcher has thought through "all" the ethical considerations regarding representation of others. This makes me want to cry. It is ludicrous to suggest that we can fully and transparently know how our own person affects the way that we write our scholarship. It is equally ludicrous to suggest that by disclosing our positionality our readers will be able to perfectly calibrate and see through our distorted lens to some objective Truth; or that we even *deserve* a reader's trust just because we talk about growing up privileged or homeless or white or brown or whatever. The issue at hand is not how to recover scholarship's lost sense of transparency--but rather to see that all knowledge of the world is tied to subjects who themselves are in the world. I could go on, but it's not necessary--suffice to say, Saldana presents a crude approximation of the feminist critique of knowledge production, a critique which he owes a great debt to, given how subsequent changes in the academy have valorized qualitative research against a hard-lined quantitative approach to social science.

The overall tone of the book is fairly casual, even conversational--which in and of itself is not problematic, except that Saldana often lapses into an editorial voice. For example, in chapter 7, he presents *without any citations* a thin summary of "embodied" research and research methodologies that prioritize the body. These he dismisses out of hand (as more an "obsession" or a "fixation" than a "lens," one of his favorite terms), without presenting any evidence that he has engaged with this scholarship at any depth. Since when is the act of writing a textbook the moment to pronounce one's opinions on other scholars, not least on entire subfields of work?

Ah, but wait, there's more. Since when is the writing of a textbook an opportunity to air one's misogynistic tendencies? Later in the same chapter, he suggests that one way of "thinking cinematically" is to reflect on what cinematic character you might most identify with. He then cites Hannibal of "Silence of the Lambs"--yes, seriously--and then claims that, for him, Hannibal's most salient personal characteristic is his "high-powered perception," his cool analytical approach, rather than *the fact that he was a serial killer of women.* Where is his editor to tell him that this is inappropriate? Where are his friends who read the manuscript? I can name fifty different leading actor roles from major motion pictures who have high-powered perception who *are not serial killers of women.* This is deeply inappropriate and perhaps unfortunately revealing.

I could go on, but I hope at this point I don't need to. PLEASE find a different book to learn qualitative methods from.
