Review
Winner of the 2006 Frantz Fanon Prize for Outstanding Work in or on the Caribbean Thought in the English Language

“What's in a name? This vigorous, politically engaged essay reveals the 'colonial matrix of power' behind the invention of the term Latin America. A timely and significant contribution to de-colonial theory and to debates about new social movements in the Americas.” John King, Warwick University

“In this gilded age of hyper-theory, and the next big paradigm that supersedes the latest, and the anxiety of not having a paradigm; in this age of theory hyper-inflation, and the furor over the latest missive from the “great masters,” it is mentally refreshing to read a major work that is not burdened by obsequiousness toward the intellectual fashions of the EuroAmerican dominated market place of ideas, and that without great fanfare manages to turn on their head all our assumptions about our place on the map of history and reason. Walter Mignolo’s The Idea of Latin America has elegantly achieved what great manifestos generally accomplish. It has announced the obsolescence of entrenched ways of thinking; it has given us new conceptual and historical narratives; and it has opened up an effaced, ignored, and derogated archive. What is announced in this book is not a new paradigm, but the existence of a type of thinking that has been producing new epistemic sites and weaving counter-narratives that both challenge the claim to universality of EuroAmerican theorizing and that nonetheless explain its origins, political economy, resilience and insidiousness. We simply will not be able to see “America” and “Latin America” in the same way after this book. Brilliantly Mignolo offers this new optics and geopolitics of knowledge by rejecting the epistemic-historical-onto-theological blackmail imposed by EuroAmerican hyper-theory: either Orientalism or Occidentalism. Beyond this imperial Manicheanism of the new, latest, improved Euro-American paradigm, beyond either you are for us (Eurocentrism), or you are against us (Thirdworldism), there is a way of thinking that looks at the geography of reason transversally, across and sideways, and not in terms of time-tables and invidious hierarchies, which allows to think many worlds co-existing in empathic solidarity. On the shelf of those works one thinks with in order to think beyond, where one finds the books of Fanon, Said, C.R. L. James, Shiva, and Retamar, one will now have to put those of Walter Mignolo.” Eduardo Mendieta, Stony Brook University

From the Back Cover
The term "Latin" America supposes that there is an America that is Latin, which can be defined in opposition to one that is not. This geo-political manifesto revisits the idea of Latinity, charting the history of the concept from its emergence in Europe under France's leadership, through its appropriation by the Creole lite of South America and the Spanish Caribbean in the second half of the nineteenth century, up to the present day.

Reinstating the indigenous peoples, the enormous population of African descent and the 40 million Latino/as in the US that are rendered invisible by the image of a homogenous Latin America, the author asks what is at stake in the survival of an idea which subdivides the Americas. He explains why an "American Union" similar to the European Union is at this point unthinkable and he insists on the pressing need to leave behind an idea of Latinity which belongs to the Creole/Mestizo mentality of the nineteenth century.

Decolonizing Knowledge in/of "Latin" America
By K. N.
This is a self-consciously polemical critique of the idea of "Latin" America from an anti-neoliberal, pro-indigenous standpoint. Mignolo's "manifesto" is a welcome addition to the field of Latin American studies and a helpful condensation of his major scholarly work, including The Darker Side of the Renaissance (1995) and Local Histories/Global Designs (2000).

The book is divided into three chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 outline Mignolo's understanding of the world-system of modernity/coloniality, which, in the Americas since the sixteenth century, paved the way for colonial domination over indigenous and black communities. The third chapter surveys various forms of resistance to the continuing logic of modernity/coloniality, including indigenous social movements, the World Social Forum, and the Zapatistas in Mexico. In many ways this chapter is the heart of Mignolo's book, forcefully articulating as it does the need to decolonize not simply territories and resources but knowledge itself -- the core beliefs and ways of seeing the world that inform our ethical relation to other human beings.

Missing from Mignolo's account is any consideration of how indigenous intellectuals (whom he supports, over and against Eurocentric, modern/colonial intellectuals) might not exactly "represent" the will of the communities they come from. He too readily accepts that these intellectuals speak the voice of "the people." I appreciate Mignolo's desire to critique Western epistemology and colonial regimes of knowledge, but I don't think he questions the category of "intellectual work" enough, even in indigenous contexts. A more ethnographic approach to indigenous intellectual work might have helped his account here.

Still, this is an accessible and engaging summary of major problems in the professional study of "Latin" America. Recommended reading for Latin American scholars and transnational activists alike.

Museums of the Mind: Magritte`s Labyrinth and Other Essays in the Arts, by Ellen Handler Spitz

This book eloquently demonstrates that just as our human relationships change and develop over time, so do our ties to cherished works of art. Such works, with their overlays of perception and projection, exert a lasting influence on the psyche. In the first half of the book, Ellen Handler Spitz guides us through a maze of surreal paintings by Ren Magritte, with psychoanalytic thought as her beacon. In the second half she leads us on a kaleidoscopic journey through other "museums of the mind," where interrelated works in drama, film, cartoon art, poetry, and opera are illuminated and rediscovered. She analyzes a performance of Chekhov's "The Bear," revisits the 1970s classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance from the perspective of the 1990s, reviews the film "Dead Poets Society," muses on the psychological themes in the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, rereads a beloved sonnet by Gerard Manley Hopkins, and reconsiders "Antigone" to discover startling insights into the "twinship of good and evil." Her final chapter, "Music of Hope," looks directly at the power of art to shape the mind as well as to be shaped by it. Here Spitz reflects on the impact of the children's opera Brundibr, written by the Czech composer Hans Krsa in 1938 and performed many times by inmates of the Terezn concentration camp.

From Publishers Weekly
Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte's mother committed suicide by drowning herself when he was 13. Spitz, a psychoanalytic critic, interprets his enigmatic paintings as signs of a lifelong struggle with this loss. In this dense but intriguing scholarly miscellany, Spitz (Art and Psyche) muses on the absurd as manifested in Chekhov's play The Bear and in Freud's dissection of jokes; interprets Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance as an avant-garde postmodernist work; and explores themes of nonconformity and rebellion in the film Dead Poets Society and in Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip whose six-year-old protagonist creates a florid fantasy life with his toy tiger. In Sophocles's Antigone, Spitz finds an ethical imperative: conflicts in life must not be avoided. Her poignant concluding essay on Brundibar, a Czech children's opera that was performed many times by child inmates at the Nazis' Terezin concentration camp, illumines the power of art to inspire hope and a will to live. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
Spitz is at once a philosophical psychoanalyst and an eloquent poet. Captivated and marvelously inspired by the disjunctive visions of the surreal Magritte, she devotes nearly half these associatively written contemplations to the labyrinth that is his work. In her view, the suicide of Magritte's mother looms as the primary motivation for his "painted puzzles" and the source of his personal eccentricity. Spitz follows her meditations on Magritte with literate observations on snippets of drama, Hollywood film, and icons of popular culture. Writing across the disciplines, she discourses on absurdity and the joke and reviews Chekhov, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Dead Poets Society, and the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Recommended for both general readers and scholars.

Richly informed...dazzling
By Julie C. Van Camp
"Interdisciplinary consideration of art is nothing new, but rarely has it been accomplished with the stunning breadth of this volume. A psychoanalyst and an expert in aesthetics for children, [she] offers art appreciation, history, and criticism richly informed by psychoanalytic, philosophic, and literary theory. . . . Spitz's writing and insights dazzle the imagination. If one learns to write in part by reading, this volume is a teacher to be treasured by all who value art and ideas." --from my review in the Journal of Aesthetic Education, Vol. 31 (spring 1997), pp. 117-120.

Lovemarks, by Kevin Roberts

"Ideas move mountains, especially in turbulent times. Lovemarks is the product of the fertile-iconoclast mind of Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi. Roberts argues vociferously, and with a ton of data to support him, that traditional branding practices have become stultified. What’s needed are customer Love affairs. Roberts lays out his grand scheme for mystery, magic, sensuality, and the like in his gloriously designed book Lovemarks.”
—Tom Peters

Tom Peters, one of the most influential business thinkers of all time, described the first edition of Lovemarks: the future beyond brands as “brilliant.” He also announced it as the “Best Business Book” published in the first five years of this century. Now translated into fourteen languages, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Lovemarks is back in a revised edition featuring a new chapter on the peculiarly human experience of shopping.

The new chapter, "Diamonds in the Mine," is an insightful collection of ideas for producers and consumers, for owners of small stores and operators of superstores. So forget making lists! Shopping, says Kevin Roberts, is an emotional event. With this as a starting point, he looks at the history of shopping and how it has changed so dramatically over the last ten years. Using the Lovemark elements of Mystery, Sensuality, and Intimacy, Roberts delves into the secrets of success that can be used to create the ultimate shopping experience.

Amazon.com Review
Sellout "Brand" or just plain "Bland"? In Lovemarks, advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi CEO Kevin Roberts delves deep into what mysteries lie behind the long-term success and unwavering customer loyalty for a can of Coke or a pair of Levi's, ultimately concluding that Love is the answer, and without some emotional connection to a product, it will dry up like a generic raisin in the sun. Enter Lovemarks, the new marketing buzzword, which will likely be bandied about at board meetings as vigorously as The Tipping Point.

But before Roberts can get to what in fact a Lovemark means in the worlds of advertising and marketing, he takes us on a virtual tour of his CV. There was his first post at Mary Quant in London, then the gig as New Products Manager of Gillette International in the Middle East, on to CEO of Pepsi in Canada, and later the same role at Lion Nathan in New Zealand. The list goes on, and so does Roberts--on and on--about his achievements and experience building brand awareness and shaking things up (he famously machine-gunned a vending machine at a presentation for a spot on the evening news). More importantly, he succeeds at blasting away the smoke and mirrors that might prevent a creative genius (or an ordinary consumer) from seeing what makes Superman the most beloved super-hero of all time.

Despite the somewhat egocentric approach to taking us there (he is, after-all, a pretty smart guy), we arrive at Roberts's point beautifully, and see what he sees: "That human attention has become our principle currency." And that, in these times, forming long-term emotionally charged relationships with customers is the only way to make a product weather the long haul. And while Roberts speaks to us in a spirited, conversational manner (that makes Lovemarks a pleasure to read), the design of the book seems to work against him, as convoluted typography and a general lack of layout consistency give the book a visually amateurish look. --Christene Barberich

From Publishers Weekly
Roberts, the New York-based CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, believes that his Love brand will change businesses, and this boldly designed volume showcases his argument that through Love, business will connect more deeply with consumers. "I was born an optimist," Roberts begins. "I always looked for opportunities where others faced up to threats or weaknesses. I believed if you were going through hell the only option was to keep going!" And that sentiment runs throughout his book, which weaves his personal history with his brand-making philosophy. While the layout is eye-catching, the text often reads like advertisement pull-outs: e.g. "the power of the edge is one of today’s most compelling ideas" and "to be out front can be lonely and uncomfortable, but remember, the lead husky gets the best view." In the end, it’s ad-folk who will glean most from this volume.

an advertising legend keeps folks on focus
By J. Young
Very interesting to me but some might feel there are parts that are overthought. Ad agencies can sometimes get stuck in thinking details to death but Kevin reminds us finding emotion and connection is more important than stacks of research that can contradict and confuse.

Not worthy of the buzz.
By Rick Wingender
The book is good but not great. It's not that I had any major disagreement with anything it says, it's just that there is really nothing new in this book, nothing that I have read or lived through a hundred times before. There weren't any "a-ha moments" or breakthrough insights. If you've never read any marketing or branding books before, then you'll probably benefit by reading this. If you're like me, and have read many, many marketing and branding books, you will learn nothing new. When you're the CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, your book is going to get published; if I had written this book and taken it to a publisher, they would have laughed at me and my incoherent writing style. Some of the concepts in this book, by the way, are also found in the old book "Raving Fans", which I think is more useful. On the positive side, some of the stories are compelling, and the photography and imaging are really interesting (I own the book, not the Kindle edition). Just don't think for a second that this book will turn you into a marketing or branding guru. It won't.
