NOT A WELL WRITTEN TEXTBOOK!

I am a graduate student studying geotechnical engineering and have used this book in my class. The problems at the end of each chapter are extremely difficult to do given the information in the textbook. I found myself constantly going to the library to attempt to get extra information which was almost always impossible to find. In fact, after spending hours on one problem, I talked to my professor about it and she spoke to the author of the book and he realized that the problem was not even possible to solve! I completely wasted hours of my time trying to solve it and it couldn't even be solved! Also, when a symbol for a constant is mentioned in the book, it is very difficult to go back and scan the pages to find out what the symbol stands for and what the correct equation is. Maybe the author can include a summary of symbols and what they stand for at the beginning of each chapter.
I would not recommend this textbook although I know that it is one of the few Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering textbooks out there.

Great book!

This is a great book.
It is true that some of the material could be updated - the book was published in 1996! Nonetheless, the basic principles of geotechnical earthquake engineering are there. Kramer's writing style makes difficult concepts accessible. The graphics and figures are nice and clear and support the text very well. A classic for anyone in the field.

Informative, well researched read

Told in first person, the author shares his experience starting a business in aerial drone photography. He discusses various make and model drones and their price points, strengths, and weaknesses. He discusses available components and their functions. He goes over cameras, and the available components relative to aerial photography. He gets into regulations and discusses where the industry is headed, and he walks the reader through methods of monetization. The Bonus section provides relevant links to get the reader started. The book is clear, concise and to the point. It is ideal for anyone with an interest in purchasing a drone with the intention to photograph with it. There aren't many books covering this emerging technology.

The ability to record birds-eye views of your surroundings is an extraordinary feature of quadcopters. In this 32-page book, author Eric Hall goes beyond casual recreational use of quadcopters to discuss more advanced topics, including the use of quadcopters in providing aerial photographic services to businesses. The book briefly discusses the various models of quadcopters that are currently available, ranging in price from under a hundred dollars up to $5,000. The author lists the features to look for in a quadcopter to be used for photography, and he mentions some favorites of his. He goes on to give some tips for taking the best photos.

One thing that can't be ignored are the FAA regulations about flying drones. Note that there are different sets of rules for hobbyists and professionals, and in both cases, these rules are evolving in response to the growing popularity of quadcopters.

The book describes examples of opportunities for selling aerial drone photography to businesses, such as real estate, filmmaking, and special events. There are some tips on marketing your services, notably through online social media and websites.

I love the author�€™s way that how he shares his experience ...

I was looking for a resource guide where I could learn more about drone photography and I was not disappointed. I liked how author shared his experience with drones even though it’s more of a hobby for him. Various makes and model of drones and their price points were discussed as well as their strengths and weaknesses. One of the best parts was the advice on what specific tools and accessories may be helpful for those starting out. There is a lot more to capturing good photographs and video via drone that I had anticipated. The part about the FAA regulations was definitely interesting and the proposed revisions that are upcoming. This guide is not exhaustive but is a good starting point for those interested in this new field.

About the Author
After initial studies of Mathematics and Physics with Astronomy at the Free University in Amsterdam (Kandidaats/B.Sc. in 1968), Johannes Bronkhorst took up the study of Sanskrit and Pali, first at the University of Rajasthan (Jaipur, India), then at the University of Pune (India). In Pune he obtained an M.A. in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1979. After his return to the Netherlands he obtained a second doctorate from the University of Leiden in 1980 (with the highest distinction). He remained attached to the University of Leiden as a researcher until 1987, in which year he was appointed full professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). He remained at the University of Lausanne until his (mandatory) retirement in 2011. He has published more than one hundred and sixty research papers, all in specialized journals, more than fifteen books, besides numerous reviews. His most recent books are: Greater Magadha (2007), Aux origines de la philosophie indienne (2008), Buddhist Teaching in India (2009), Language and Reality (2011), Buddhism in the Shadow of Brahmanism (2011), Karma (2011).

Becoming More Familiar with the Building Blocks of Buddhism

This book is a first rate study of the earliest structuring of the Buddha's teachings. This is a foundational book, but a scholarly work best approached with a basic understanding of Buddhism and Buddhist terminology. It discusses dharmas, the building blocks of Buddhism, the stages of meditation, the Jhanas as higher mental consciousness, the four noble truths, the importance of the concept of anatta or not self, and emptiness as developed through Theravadin and Mahayana teachings. It gives the reader the basic goals of understanding necessary along the path. And where does this path begin and end? "It is without origin and end, uncreated and unchanging, and has not entered existence at all. It is unthinkable, imponderable, immeasureable, unaccountable, and without equal......" at page 131. Reading this book over a period of a month, there were points where it was necessary to stop and re-read, reflect and meditate. When you decide you're serious and want to go beyond the many popular books now available on Buddhism you're ready to read and savor this book.

Vital context for Buddha's teaching

While much of the Buddha's teaching transcends specific cultures, there is a lot to be gained by the serious student through understanding the cultural context that nurtured the teachings we have received. It takes nothing away from the value of these teachings to know that complex cultural and philosophical currents have shaped the texts that have come down to us. In seeking the gnosis, or wordless knowing, that lies at the heart of these texts, understanding the philosophical history of India is crucial. Bronkhorst's book provides an excellent and reasonably concise primer on these subjects.

Clear and insightful

Perhaps the best introduction to Buddhist teachings. Bronkhorst is a great scholar and writes with great clarity. He really has a knack for presenting the most important parts of the teachings in a very insightful way. In only 60 pages he presents the Buddha’s original teachings with many excerpts from the suttas that makes the text really come alive. He is clear that the central teachings of the Buddha are the four noble truths (though this ‘title’ may be late) and the practices culminating in the four Jhanas. (Though sometimes he seems to forget this and states that the Buddha searched for liberation from rebirth, instead of from suffering.) About the Author

Tara L. Kuther is Professor of Psychology at Western Connecticut State University where she has taught courses in child, adolescent, and adult development since 1996. She earned her BA in Psychology from Western Connecticut State University and her MA and PhD in Developmental Psychology at Fordham University. �Dr. Kuther’s research on moral development, social cognition, and risks to adolescent development has appeared in journals such as Journal of Adolescence, Journal of Early Adolescence, Addictive Behaviors, and the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. Dr. Kuther is particularly interested in promoting undergraduate and graduate students’ professional development and has authored over a dozen books intended to help students navigate the challenges of pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology.

Dr Kuther is Fellow of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (American Psychological Association, Division 2). Her interest in promoting excellence in college teaching has influenced her scholarly and professional activities.� Dr. Kuther’s� work examining ethical issues that arise in higher education and methods of sensitizing students to ethical issues has appeared in journals such as Teaching of Psychology, College Teaching, and Gerontology and Geriatrics Education. �������� �Currently the chair of the Society for Research in Child Development Teaching Committee, Dr. Kuther has also been active in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology �as Executive Committee member,� chair of the Task Force on Instructional Research Awards,� and chair of the Long Range Planning Committee.�

About the Author
Antonio Simon, Jr. is an award-winning author of several books. His debut fantasy/comedy adventure novel, "The Gullwing Odyssey" was an instant hit in 2013.
