EPIC! A "deal with the devil" has never been so evil!
By Judith D. Collins
A special thank you, to Atria Books and NetGalley for a complimentary ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

One word . . EPIC! A "deal with the devil" has never been so evil!

FORTY ACRES was the most intense thriller --thought-provoking, and gripping debut novel (my pulse is still racing) - full of power and revenge. FORTY ACRES has my vote for "Thriller Debut Novel of 2014", a talented author, Dwayne Alexander Smith, has just won me over as a "fan for life."

Amazing writing, brilliantly developed characters, well researched, and an astounding storyline. There is so much depth to this THRILLER, as so want to discuss, debate, and challenge the "what if's" (as I booked marked something from every chapter); however, this is one of those "ONE in a million books" you dare not say a word to spoil, or hint of anything within a review, to give away the suspense for the readers. From controversial issues of race and power, hatred, wealth, love, trust, betrayal, and secrets--it has it all.

Whereas, "Devil's Advocate" raised the preposition that "winning is everything", FORTY ACRES is about "revenge and power." Several similarities -both had smart intuitive wives, devil/master, and both main characters are attorneys who get sucked into a world of mystery, power, and wealth. (Of course, Forty Acres in a "class by itself") A WINNER out of the gate!

FORTY ACRES deserves an unveiling, with no hints of any sort as each and every page is just too BLOODY GOOD. You feel yourself experiencing every setting, footstep, movement and facial expression, trying to predict the next move, with details so realistic, you are holding your breath, as you swish to the next page to see what lies ahead.

Martin, black attorney and main character totally ROCKS, and so fell in love with him - brilliant strategies, witty one liners, and oh the dedication of the book by the author was PRICELESS.

As the author is a screen play writer, I can envision a movie based on this predicted best seller, with a cast of stars (I want a front row seat) for a total blockbuster. With a surprise at the end - one can only hope for a series to follow. "I guess, my heart can get back to normal until his next book" . . . Here's hoping it is soon!

This provocative new novel is most deserving of a 5 STAR ++. Compliments to the author and publisher for an appealing front cover and overview, which drew me in immediately, and exceeded all my expectations.

Fascinating, Disturbing Tale Avenging Sins of Slavery.
By Tex Reader
3.5 of 5 stars –
This is a thought provoking thriller that brings to mind such competing adages as “an eye for an eye…” & “sins of the father…” vs. “two wrongs don’t make a right” and “take the high road”. It poses a question of how do you properly redress the sins of slavery? And what scars still remain? Its a story fueled by a compelling premise seeking racial justice through revenge; and in fact, I gave it an extra star for its audacious premise. After Dr. King’s assassination and riots, a black friend of mine said there would soon be a black uprising; 40 years later Obama was elected President. This novel falls somewhere in between.

Upfront, due to the nature of this novel, I feel I need to identify myself as white, and for me then, what I can say is it did indeed make me think. As such, part of its appeal was to remind me of the continuing, lingering social and personal consequences of racial discrimination, abuse and injustice, and the subsequent struggle and actions people take to try and overcome that.

Dwayne Alexander Smith does a good job laying the groundwork and case for his unique premise, using descriptive language, fairly well drawn characters without too much stereotyping, and a decently paced plot. I like that he included very recent happenings (e.g., the supreme court’s Voting Rights Act ruling, the Zimmerman case) to show that the issue is still with us today. And it’s good that I wasn’t sure how it would end, but ultimately Smith completed the story well.

Without giving anything away, I did feel throughout that it didn’t give enough depth and stretched credibility in terms of plot, characters, choices made and actions taken. And being a psychologist myself, I think it fell a little short of portraying the real psychology, mentality, appeal and brainwashing behind what I would call a cult, its leader and followers.

Overall, the story kept me engaged, wondering, and yes, squirming, a bit, which was all good.
(I'm excited to have won this as a Goodreads First Read – so thanks!)

You don't get discussion like this from normal pop-fiction crime lit
By Stephanie Willis
This book is a rarity. You don't get discussion like this from normal pop-fiction crime lit.

I really think this novel was a success. Dwayne Alexander Smith took huge risks with this novel. The premise could so easily cause knee-jerk reactions, ranging from disbelief to offense, but I think he succeeds by never letting us think that the ideas presented are outright crazy nor morally sound. The reader is presented with a reality bent by the wills of an angry old man but can also accept that reality as a possibility.

Race is obviously The Point of this novel so I can't not point it out but it's hard to know how to discuss it after this. The thing that sticks out to me so much is how little I see black writers on the shelves in the popular literature section or within the crime/mystery novel area. I know better than to think this is for lack of writers. It was really nice to read a book from the point of view of a non-white person. I know I need to do this more and venturing away from what the media recommends me to read is the best option. But that said, it was really nice to read a book that challenged my weird perceptions on characters. So often, I read a book and I picture the character in our mind, I picture a white man or woman. If the writer thought to include any characters of color, they use their race in their description or a very obvious give away (think of JK Rowling making Lee Jordan the "boy with dreadlocks" as a way to differentiate him from the white characters, surely she did the same with Cho Chang besides giving her a racist name but I can't recall), virtually making white the default mode for characters in popular books. When the main character enters a dinner party consisting of only black couples, he feels at ease. But I felt made aware of my privilege when even doing something as simple as entering a book. Most of the time the characters I know and love look like me. And that's not something important when you're used to it but it's something.

This also succeeds from a thriller/crime novel point of view. It is a turn pager. The bad guys are bad but also at times sympathetic and the main character is smart and relatable. The world it creates is interesting and sad. The history it shares is also interesting and helped me recognize my ignorance on a lot of civil rights issues they don't teach in schools. Yet it never comes off as preachy or educational, but always as a story about men being men and how even the most sympathetic of men can be evil. I don't know if Mr. Smith knew this when he wrote it, but I also feel it is very feminist in some ways. The women characters are brief but strong and though they are not important in the main story thread nor appreciated by the main men characters, they are written to be so much stronger and smarter then the men they are married to. I just wish that story line was developed more.

I recommend this book to thriller/crime fans but give warning to highbrow literature fans that you may not get what you seek here.

This book is a collection of some of the best-designed labels for bottled water. Our selection of designs is based on the aesthetic qualities of both the label and the container.

An Evil Day in Georgia: The Killing of Coleman Osborn and the Death Penalty in the Progressive-Era South, by Robert Neil Smith

On the night of August 5, 1927, someone shot and killed Coleman Osborn, a store owner in
Chatsworth, Georgia, in his place of business. Police and neighbors found only circumstantial
traces of the murderer: tire tracks, boot prints, shell casings, and five dollars in cash near
Osborn’s body. That day, three individuals—James Hugh Moss, a black family man locally
renowned for his baseball skills; Clifford Thompson, Moss’s white friend who grew up in the
Smoky Mountains; and Eula Mae Thompson, Clifford’s wife and a woman with a troubling history
of failed marriages and minor run-ins with the law—left Etowah, Tennessee, unknowingly
on a collision course with Deep South justice.

In chilling detail, Robert N. Smith examines the circumstantial evidence and deeply flawed
judicial process that led to death sentences for Moss and the Thompsons. Moving hastily in the
wake of the crime, investigators determined from the outset that the Tennessee trio, well known
as bootleggers, were the culprits. Moss and Clifford Thompson were tried and convicted within a
month of the murder. Eula Mae was tried separately from the other two defendants in February
1928, and her sentence brought her notoriety and celebrity status. On the night of her husband’s
execution, she recanted her original story and would change it repeatedly in the following years.
As reporters from Atlanta and across Georgia descended on Murray County to cover the trials
and convictions, the public perception of Eula Mae changed from that of cold-blooded murderer
to victim—one worthy of certain benefits that suited her status as a white woman. Eula Mae
Thompson’s death sentence was commuted in 1928, thanks in part to numerous press interviews
and staged photos. She was released in 1936 but would not stay out of trouble for long.

An Evil Day in Georgia exposes the historic deficiencies in death penalty implementation
and questions, through its case study of the Osborn murder, whether justice can ever be truly
unbiased when capital punishment is inextricably linked to personal and political ambition and
to social and cultural values.

Review
"American history is cluttered with wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice.
In An Evil Day in Georgia, author Robert Smith raises lingering questions about the
guilt of two men—one white and one black—executed for a murder in the Deep South
in the 1920s. . . . The telling of this story, one that played out in the Jim Crow era and the
days of bootlegging and the Ku Klux Klan, exposes the death penalty’s imperfections even
as it calls into question the veracity of a woman’s confession, later recanted, that
once brought her within a stone’s throw of the state’s electric chair.”

—John Bessler, author of Cruel and Unusual: The American Death Penalty
and the Founders’ Eighth Amendment

This is absolutely a fantastic book. Chapter 1 goes deep into the history of Murray County, GA and gives a wonderful description of the physical, political, and cultural scene. Understanding the background of the county made the rest of the story so much more intense. I loved the entire book and the detailed story. This is a must read!

Justice denied.
By Kat
It wasn't an easy fast read, but it was fascinating to me, personally as one of the people in the book, Eula was related to me. It is a very detailed book, full of a lot of information. Very sad how our justice system wasn't a fair justice system at all during their lifetime.

Named a Best of Book of the Year by The Economist

Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist

The Dadaab refugee camp is many things: to the charity workers, it’s a humanitarian crisis; to the Kenyan government, a “nursery for terrorists”; to the Western media, a dangerous no-go area. But to its half a million residents, it’s their last resort.

Situated hundreds of miles from any other settlement, deep within the inhospitable desert of northern Kenya where only thorn bushes grow, Dadaab is a city like no other. Its buildings are made from mud, sticks, or plastic. Its entire economy is grey. And its citizens survive on rations and luck. Over the course of four years, Ben Rawlence became a firsthand witness to a strange and desperate place, getting to know many of those who had come seeking sanctuary. Among them are Guled, a former child soldier who lives for football; Nisho, who scrapes an existence by pushing a wheelbarrow and dreaming of riches; Tawane, the indomitable youth leader; and Kheyro, a student whose future hangs upon her education.

In City of Thorns, Rawlence interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the camp, sketching the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped. Lucid, vivid, and illuminating, City of Thorns is an urgent human story with deep international repercussions, brought to life through the people who call Dabaab home.

Review

"[A] remarkable book...Like Dadaab itself, the story has no conclusion. It is a portrait, beautifully and movingly painted. And it is more than that. At a time when newspapers are filled with daily images of refugees arriving in boats on Europe’s shores, when politicians and governments grapple with solutions to migration and erect ever larger walls and fences, it is an important reminder that a vast majority of the world’s refugees never get as far as a boat or a border of the developed world.”―Caroline Moorehead, The New York Times Book Review

“The most absorbing book in recent memory about life in a refugee camp....Mr. Rawlence’s major feat is stripping away the anonymity....He transforms its denizens from faceless victims into three-dimensional human beings. Along the way, Dadaab emerges from the ever-present heat and dust to become much more than a refugee camp.”―Howard French, The Wall Street Journal

“Read this one.”―Associated Press

"[An] ambitious, morally urgent new book."―The New York Times

“Magisterial...[The book] moves like a thriller.”―Los Angeles Times

"In light of the contemporary crisis, City of Thorns serves as a cautionary tale. Rawlence's portrait of nine Dadaab residents offers a stark counterpoint to the rhetoric that too often speaks for refugees....This is a vital book at a critical moment in global history."―Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Gripping.”―The Economist

"City of Thorns is revelatory read. It is a lesson in politics, geography, economics, and humanity. Ben Rawlence's book will give readers the same insight into Dadaab that Katherine Boo gave readers into Mumbai with her book Beyond the Beautiful Forevers. This is an important book that will open your eyes and your heart.”―Everyday eBook

"[Rawlence] has done a remarkable job, bringing home the reality behind those statistics by telling us what life is really like inside one of those camps....Rawlence's description of the camp economy is fascinating and shocking....A masterful account. Next time someone refers derisively to a 'bunch of migrants,' get them to read this book."―The Sunday Times (London)

“That Rawlence has managed to capture so much of this unlikely city’s chaos and confusion in a narrative that is very nearly impossible to put down is an achievement in reportage that few have matched. Dadaab’s half a million residents could not have asked for a better champion than this researcher for Human Rights Watch, and while the facts and figures he shares are stunning, it is the nine individuals whose stories he focuses on who give the book its heart....Comparisons to Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers (2012) are spot-on."―Booklist (starred review)

“With remarkable intimacy, Rawlence reveals the humanity of these people in crisis who must struggle to survive in the overcrowded camp....A significant, timely, and gloomy tale that reveals the human costs of a growing world crisis.”―Kirkus Reviews

“By combining his own experiences with interviews with residents of Dadaab, [Rawlence] makes the human rights crisis-rarely covered in the media-vivid and immediate for readers....This is a compelling examination of the tragedy of a place where one 'can only survive...by imagining a life elsewhere.'”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"City of Thorns is a powerful and timely reminder of how unresolved conflicts, from Somalia to Syria, have contributed to the unprecedented global refugee crisis. Ben Rawlence's intimate, vivid portrait of the forgotten refugees in Dadaab is a much needed effort to close the humanity gap between the West and the rest. A must-read."―Kim Ghattas, author of The Secretary: A Journey with Hillary Clinton from Beirut to the Heart of American Power

“City of Thorns is a brilliant if haunting book that reveals just what it means to be numbered among the countless tens of thousands of refugees whose existence has been shattered by conflict, who survive with nothing, cast adrift from tradition and security, obliged to cobble together shadow lives from the detritus of memory and lost dreams. It is at once both an intimate story of redemption and hope, a prayer for the innocent, and a damning universal indictment of all those whose monstrous acts and vainglorious ambitions unleash the dogs of war.”―Wade Davis, author of Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory, and the Conquest of Everest

“The most important book I've read in a long time. Not only does it make plain modern geopolitics, and what makes a refugee, it holds deeper truths about humanity and the system we have designed to preserve it when all seems lost. I worked in these camps at the height of this crisis. I needed this book. As we face a world with more people displaced from their homes than any ever before, City of Thorns is essential reading.”―Dr. James Maskalyk, author of Six Months in Sudan

“Where once writers made myths, now increasingly it’s the writer’s job to unmake the myths created by modern media. City of Thorns is a clear-eyed account of people living in limbo and a testament both to human frailty and human resilience....As timely as Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring―this book should be required reading.”―Aminatta Forna, author of The Memory of Love

“At a time when West governments are obsessing over migrant flows, City of Thorns offers unique insights into what prompts people to abandon their ancestral homes in the first place and the dreams that send them questing for a better life. Researching this book can't have been easy. Ben Rawlence is to be congratulated not just for his accessible writing style, but for his modesty, pluck and determination.”―Michela Wrong, author of In the Footseps of Mr. Kurtz and Borderlines

“In this book Ben Rawlence has given us a complex tapestry of refugee life without romanticising it. It is like a Brueghel picture in words. An eloquent testimony by a writer with heart.”―Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, author of Refusing the Veil and The Settler's Cookbook

"Written with great integrity and insight, this is an urgent, important book that needs to be read. Through tireless and empathetic reportage Rawlence has worked for 5 years to give Dadaab a voice. Now we should listen."―Owen Sheers, author of I Saw a Man

“Compassionate and powerful, this book gets to the heart of the tragedy of Somalia, and the struggles that face those displaced by war and want in eastern Africa. To better understand the current crisis of migration in our modern world, start here.”―David Anderson, professor of African History

Informative and Important Read
By Tony G.
Excellent, interesting, and easy to read. I'm a teacher in a school with many Somali refugee students and while taking Somali classes through community ed. the teacher (who was from Dadaab camp) recommended it. I think the book and Rawlence's experiences with the people in the book help most of us who have minimal knowledge of the situation gain some perspective on the refugee experience and the many challenges we never think about. It's hard to imagine growing up and living in an area the geographical size of New Orleans with 400,000+ others and no building permits near war torn areas where no one wants you, not the Kenyan government or the largely controlled territories of Al-Shabaab. Google image Dadaab to get an idea of what the camps look like. If you want to gain some perspective on the situation in Somalia and refugee experiences in general, this is a must read!

What it is really like to be a refugee in a camp.
By Bryan Thomas Weikel
Never have I gotten to know refugee camp residents so well as in this book. I am not an aid worker so I haven't had real-world experience, but as far as what you can get from a book this is the best I have read. I have read other books written by aid workers that describe the experience for them, but Ben Rawlence has made this book 98% about the story of the refugee camp residents - from their perspective. He evidently got to know the people he wrote about very well and very meticulously documented their stories. He then tells their stories very well. He also had each of the people review what he wrote about them (or actually read to them what he wrote) to make sure that his description of their suffering, joys, frustration, pain, and thoughts were all accurate. If you want to know what really goes on in a refugee camp, (and some of the international forces that drive the camp policy), and what compels a people to take refuge in a camp (and to leave it) this is the best book you can read.

Trials of Endurance
By wjb
I completed this book left with a feeling of profound sadness. This was an eye-opening account of what these people endure on a daily basis - war surrounding them, lack of food, privacy, the elements, and stuck right in the middle of the inevitable tug of war regarding politics. This should be required reading.
Just this week my church sponsored a family of 13, I believe, who had been living in a refugee camp for 19 years. They now have housing thanks to members of the congregation who answered the call for assistance. The culture shock will be something they will all have to come to terms with, but I can only imagine their joy.

The Law of Attraction: The Secret to Manifesting Magic, Money and Love, by Craig Beck

The Law of Attraction can easily be understood by becoming aware that 'like attracts like' or putting it another way 'you get back what you give out'. Sounds simple, but how do you make it an automatic part of your being? An essential component of the Law of Attraction is realizing that where you fix your attention can have a powerful impact on what happens to you. However, despite what you may have been told your ability to manifest the life of your dreams has nothing to do with positive thinking and affirmations. Think anything you want but unless you believe it, you will not be sending the right vibrations out into the universe to have it appear. You see, everything in the world is just energy vibrating at different frequencies. The sports car you want is just the same as you, a collection of atomic particles fluctuating at a precise frequency to generate it's physical form. If you want the sports car in your life you simply have to send out the intention resonating at the exact same frequency. You may be wondering if this is all true then why do so many people continue to suffer with poverty, lack and want. Most people simply dismiss this theory as 'new age mumbo jumbo', but this is a law and just like any other it doesn't care whether you believe or not. The law of gravity applies its force on you regardless of what you believe and so does the law of attraction. Even though there is a great deal of value to even merely finding out what the Law of Attraction is, this profound book takes you to an advanced level of understanding. In short, if you implement everything you read in this book your life will change more positively and dramatically than you may have ever believed possible. You will come to be more attentive to underlying negativity and can begin to combat it with new beliefs and sensations that better reflect your constructive vision of the upcoming future. Broken down into seven powerful chapters, each dealing with an important area of your life. If you can open your mind to a concept that has already changed the lives of thousands then you have truly found the genie's lamp! • How to attract money using the law of attraction • Living in abundance • Find your soul mate and more love than you thought possible • Manifest perfect health and vitality • Ask believe receive • Becoming fearless www.CraigBeck.com
